What it is like to be a foster parent?

@Livingthedream55

I would like to ask some follow up questions after this post, but think it is best to put it in a separate thread.

6. I am strongly considering being a foster parent.

I have been thinking about this too, sometimes. We have no children ourselves. Being a permanent foster parent would have quite an impact on our life and I don't think I would want to do this for 10 years in a row.

I have understood that you can be a temporary foster parents, for giving children a short time shelter, or offering a child a long term/permanent residence. I guess children would behave a bit awkward when being moved from one short time foster parent to the next and they probably wouldn't bond. Still, offering a place for 1-some years would be the best option for my situation, I guess.

Does anyone of you have experiences you want to share?

I haven't been a foster parent, but my parents were on an emergency back-up foster parent list or something when I was growing up. We had maybe four kids stay with us that I remember. I think they stayed between a few days and two weeks. There was a baby / small toddler whose mother had short-term difficulty coping after the father got in trouble with the law, a teenage girl who'd hosted a big crazy party while her parents were on vacation, and two other kids whose stories I never heard. I'm sure it was a hassle for my parents, but it seems like it was a worthwhile thing to do. With the nicer kids, it was like having a sleepover or a friend staying over for a little while.
