Hodges Phone Directory = Garbage
« on: May 27, 2016, 08:40:07 AM »
Like many people, I don't answer my cell phone for callers that I don't already know. If the call is legit, they can leave a voice mail and I will call them back.

Still, curiosity gets the best of me and I usually Google unfamiliar phone numbers that call me. If the number comes up as a telemarketer I set them to an ignore list.

Sometimes they are just innocent wrong numbers.

Maybe a year ago a site called Hodges Directory stared showing up in Google phone number search results. Pretty handy, I thought, as it seemed to show name and address results for both private cell and land lines.

But I tried putting my cell phone number (I've had the same number for 13 years) and I got a bogus result. Wrong name and address, only the city was right.

So I tried many of the non business numbers in my contacts list, and Hodges Directory failed to correctly identify even one number's owner name and address.

Also note, I could not find any way to search on the Hodges site. All searches were done through Google using the
site:hodges-directory.us/
parameter.

Whats the purpose of a 100% wrong phone reverse look up? Ad traffic? If so, why hasn't Google caught on and removed them from search results?

Probably because Google doesn't really enforce internet validity in the content they search through. Not to mention that there are sites upon sites, and getting people, even free users to enforce valid content can be inherently subjective.
On top of that, most people that search a number on Google and get some result don't keep on searching further. As far as Google is concerned, it is a well-connected site, it has searchable and relevant content. They can't go about fact checking every single webpage, wiki page and radical ideablog out there..

Also, apparently people still click on ads in this day and age... and fall for commercials somehow..? but that's a whole other topic about the marketing effectiveness.
