Hacked phone numbers
« on: February 15, 2018, 02:06:09 PM »
How does this happen? I am pretty careful but I had someone confirm to me that they received a call from my number. My wife has had this happen to her also.

I don't think, but am not sure but it doesn't mean that someone can access my bank accounts etc ( I do not keep any accounts linked to my phone). Here is one good article for that , looks like I need another email address.

Though I am not sure this is the same thing since my phone still works(texting and calling etc), and so does my wifes???

It's probably a spoofed Caller ID thing, not a stolen number. Spammers and prank callers are altering/forging their CID information to make it harder to track back short of getting law enforcement to put a trap on the line of the receiving end for call harassment, which can be difficult to get done these days. All the jollies, none of the blowback. Usually, it's nothing personal.

I think  thee main reason they spoof CID is to make it look like a local number when they're calling from some off-shore call centre.  I've actually 'received' a call from my own phone number!

Nothing to worry about, then.

Times change. It was mostly done to make @Daley easier to do for folks to get my attention. Spaces will give you fits in usernames unless you know the SMF Profile ID number for the feature. It was a fun joke name on multiple levels beyond the obviously puerile (especially me being in networking, communications and tech with a keen eye on legal contracts and copyright), but function won out over form.

I had this happen yesterday.

Robocall.

Called it back just to see and a woman answered (definitely local, local accent).

Swore she did not call me.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
