Free speech thread for Iris
« on: February 04, 2017, 10:45:07 AM »

Are there truly people who "are not safe to speak out?" Other than Milo Yiannopolis who is physically threatened and kept from speaking at specific places, it seems like the populace here in the U.S. Is energized and into speaking out, as evidenced by this thread. I think it is GREAT for our democracy!

Or perhaps you mean in Canada people are not "safe to speak out." There is that pesky Human Rights Tribunal that clamped right down on Mark Steyn''s writing. I dont know who else they are threatening into silence, sorry, I dont follow Canadian politics that closely.

To keep this focused on the thrjead intent, and because  speech is really a big one with me, I sent  small contribution to the ACLU today. Small! But it has been years since
I donated , decades even, and I hope they will continue in defending free speech in the U.S.

Thank you Iris!  Yes, there are people who are not safe even doing things like singing and dancing.  This is old news, but think of the young Iranians who were jailed and sentenced to lashes for dancing in this video.  Fortunately with the international outcry, their sentences were suspended.  Anyway, it has now become harder for people like that to escape and come to a country like the US where they can live in relative peace and freedom.

I know you know this, but that was probably what Joon was talking about, right?

P.S. I  was just thinking about the video this morning because I came back from a party where the children were dancing to "Happy". No arrests were made.

I think Iris was talking about free speech in the US. ??

I don't see where Mark Steyn was censored. Complaints were made, criticisms were offered (even some from government agencies), but nothing was actually suppressed. "The federal Canadian Human Rights Commission dismissed the Canadian Islamic Congress' complaint against Maclean's in June 2008."

Oh, the original comment was here:

Rereading it all, I think that Joon was talking about free speech worldwide, and Iris took her to be talking about free speech in the US and Canada.

I didn't want to derail the small daily acts thread further so I started this one.

Thanks! I thought Joon was talking about situations in Canada. She said she saw people who are not free to speak out regularly. I took that to mean local to her.

Thanks Iris, that makes sense.  If Joon sees this maybe she can explain further if she likes.
