Favourite quotes? (For Mom)
« on: October 15, 2015, 11:09:31 PM »
I'm working on a very mustachian Christmas present: I'm making a magazine for my mom! Full of recipes, photos, articles, fun facts, and... Quotes!

This is where you come in. Please share your favourites, with source. And thanks for the help!

This one makes the cut for sure:

“My uncle Alex Vonnegut, a Harvard-educated life insurance salesman who lived at 5033 North Pennsylvania Street, taught me something very important.

He said that when things were really going well we should be sure to NOTICE it. He was talking about simple occasions, not great victories: maybe drinking lemonade on a hot afternoon in the shade, or smelling the aroma of a nearby bakery; or fishing, and not caring if we catch anything or not, or hearing somebody all alone playing a piano really well in the house next door.

Uncle Alex urged me to say this out loud during such epiphanies: "If this isn't nice, what is?”

- Kurt Vonnegut

Another Robert Frost: "In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
Walt Whitman: "I have learned that to be with those I like is enough."
Thoreau: "Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”
John Muir: "Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul."

Love your gift idea =)

Great gift idea! First quote that came to my mind is from Madeleine L'Engle: "But unless we are creators, we are not fully alive."

I had a teacher who quoted Shakespeare thusly: "All's well that ends well." When things are going poorly, it gives me something to look forward to. Sort of a this too shall pass.

Then my all time favourite taken from The Ladder of St. Augustine (Longfellow):

We have not wings, we cannot soar;
But we have feet to scale and climb
By slow degrees, by more and more,
The cloudy summits of our time.

...

The distant mountains, that uprear
Their solid bastions to the skies,
Are crossed by pathways, that appear
As we to higher levels rise.

The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight,
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward in the night.

Maybe not for your book, but still one of my favorites.
