Favorite Breakfast
« on: August 24, 2013, 02:20:38 AM »
Not sure why, but this popped into my head tonight.

What's your favourite breakfast? Pre-training, guilty pleasure, whatever.

For me, specifically pre-training when I was still competing in powerlifting was the following:

1cup grits (uncooked)
8oz bison patty, medium rare
2 soft eggs on top
splash of bbq, splash of hot sauce
top it with a finely chopped spicy pickle

The best.

Most days I have:

soft boiled egg, teaspoon or so of coconut oil and ~4oz ground grass fed beef, or venison, or elk, or whatever else is dead and frozen in the freezer. :)

Bacon and egg toasted sandwich - brilliant taste and easily powers me through 'til lunch time.

Add a slice of pepperjack and you have my favorite breakfast, most wake-up food for me is oatmeal or knock-off cheerios or raisin bran in whole milk with juice.

Normal day:

Homemade vanilla yogurt with fresh fruit and a cup of coffee

Price and health aside, my ultimate guilty pleasure breakfast:

This restaurant near where I used to live in Brooklyn had these amazing fried pancakes and also made eggs Benedict with smoked salmon instead of ham it came with a side of the most perfect french fries too.  I could never pick, sometimes I'd have to order both!!

In warm weather I like Weetabix cereal with ground flaxseed and berries.  When it's cold I alternate between oatmeal and cream of wheat, also with ground flaxseed and berries.  I always have two cups of locally-roasted coffee.  The few times I go out for brunch I order eggs Benedict if it's on the menu because they're kind of a pain to make at home.

Homemade vanilla yogurt
How do you make that? Sounds pretty good to me.

Mine is usually fruit and cereal with low fat (pretty much fat free) quark. If I have more time I'll make myself an omelette with bacon, ham, cheese or whatever else there is in the fridge.

Oh, and coffee.

Egg fried rice with leftovers! And ususally I can't resist adding an extra soft egg on top.
I don't do it often because cooking in the morning always makes me late for work. But when I reach FI I'll be able to do it every day! :)

Oatmeal with peanut butter mixed in, and whatever fruit is in season. Right now I am enjoying fresh peaches :)

There are lots of ways to make yogurt and home, and it is really easy and very tasty!  Far superior to (and cheaper than) store-bought. You can use a dedicated yogurt machine, you can make it in a crockpot, or even just make it in your oven.  Recipes are easy to google!!  To make it vanilla I just add a touch of sweetener and a few drops of vanilla extract!  Very yummy!

I go through different stages of what I love to eat in the mornings.

It's Winter here at the moment so I have been loving an orange, one or two boiled eggs (depending how hungry I am) with a small knob of salted butter on top.

YUM.

My ultimate breakfast is fruit (preferably berries/or tropical fruits like mangoes and lychees) with home made yoghurt drizzled with raw honey.  Divine.

Most mornings I have some sort of toasted bread drenched in olive oil and fruit (whatever is on hand).

Absolute favorite special occasion breakfast would be biscuits and sausage gravy the way the Mr. makes it with sauteed peppers and onions in the gravy, homemade biscuits and Mimosas made with fresh squeezed Texas red grapefuits.

The daily:  oatmeal with fruit, a hard boiled egg, and a cup of coffee.  I'll finish the child's yogurt too if she doesn't finish it.

Weekends with the small fry:  GF pancakes with lots of fruit, coffee.

Weekends without the small fty:  omelette, turkey bacon, toast, hash browns, coffee, and occasionally a mimosa.  I call it the kitchen wrecker. Hehe.

Organic eggs with deep orange yolks, scrambled. Udi gluten free toast with cinnamon and honey. One sausage link. Raw milk and orange juice to wash it down. It's the BEST!

4 fried eggs, 6 pieces of bacon, side of corned beef hash, and enough coffee to give a small child a heart attack.

2 eggs sunny side up and 2 strips of bacon.  Pretty much every single morning, actually-my husband is a creature of habit and he wakes up before me, makes it for both of us and leaves mine on the kitchen counter for me.

This reminds me of a recipe from PJ O'Rourke's book The Bachelor Home Companion called Egg Foo Breakfast:  three scrambled eggs with the previous night's Chinese food leftovers dumped in.  I have made this more than once.

Several large toasted home made English muffins ( this recipe works very well for them - http://www.sourdoughhome.com/index.php?content=englishmuffins ) with butter, five or six eggs, and whatever freshly diced fruit we have on hand with some greek yogurt.  That will keep me running for 5-6 hours . . .

Scrambled eggs with fried rice and plenty of peas is a pretty awesome breakfast!  I should really make this again, it's been too long!

I generally eat eggs in a basket made with homemade bread.

Favorite breakfast though would be homemade rhubarb or wild berry pie.

1cup grits (uncooked)
8oz bison patty, medium rare

Kudos for including grits in the menu. You must be from the South. My favorite would be:

Grits w/ cheddar cheese
2 strips of bacon
Fried egg, over easy
Coffee and orange juice

I love grits, I don't eat them hardly ever anymore these days unfortunately.

I have been unable to purchase stone ground grits in the groccery store since I moved to Texas, all they seem to have are the instant kind.  We've had to have them brought in by friends who visit Georgia over the summers.

It's real hard to find anything but instant around here, have you tried Central Market or a Whole Foods?

Or you could order em off Amazon:

Now I'm craving grits, haha

I'm surpised no one has mentioned breakfast burritos.  That's pretty much my go-to.
