Egg prices (California)
« on: January 10, 2018, 07:14:01 PM »
At my local Wally Mart 5 dozen eggs went for $3.18. Last week they went for $5.93. Yesterday they went up to $7.20. Anyone know what's going on? I checked out the new to see if there was a reason, but most of the articles I found came from the original cage free law that happened in 2014. Wondering if it's a Walmart pricing thing, algorithm run amok?

It isn't just Walmart. Our eggs at both Ralph's and Aldi's went from $0.77-0.88 to $2.69/dozen in two weeks. I picked up two dozen for $3.69 at Costco today, though. Still not as good as your price, but better than anything around here.

NPR suggests that it is national, and that it is just due to people like us gorging on eggs while they were cheap.

Supply and demand. Easter is coming.
The bunnies aren't laying this year as Hugh Hefner died, Playboy got sold, and Bunnies were evicted from the Mansion.
Chickens are now laying chocolate eggs to pick up the slack.
Increased security costs as farmers are setting up surveillance systems to prevent Rocky from getting into the henhouses and fomenting a grand escape.
On the good news side, Kinder Chocolate eggs are finally coming to 'Murica from Socialist Europe.
What does National Poultry Radio know besides counting chickens before they hatch?

California animal welfare laws are one of the big reasons out there prices have been on the rise. Rules that change animal confinement. So I would think that spills over and effects everyone. Ours have doubled in the midwest where I shop.

The thing is prices already skyrocketed, then they went back down. This recent rise is something else I think.

Are chickens affected by frost?  I know some vegetables are pricey now due to that.

IMO anything near $1/Fox was a steal and I loaded up all I could reasonably eat.  Didn’t last long either in my area.  It only got that low because of a glut caused by overreaction to bird flu

Ps i meant $1/doz but I’m leaving it damnit

They dont lay eggs when its super cold out BUT I would think the larger producers have temp control in there facilities. Though with that cold spell last week seemed by me at least thats when they soared. But from what I have found its the California laws thats effecting it. Yes they went up and then dropped and then went up again but thats probably because people shyed away a bit. I dont know. See where they go.

Also by me which is worse is tomatoes. The have doubled if not tripled by us  but then apples are half the price. So who f+++ing knows.  Sure its all weather and fed related.

Butter is sky high too and has been for at least 6 or more months. I am always watching for sales but they are rare. Not sure what is up with that either. I used to have like 6 lbs horded in my downstairs fridge at all times. Now, I am lucky to have 2 horded up. Just bought eggs here in CT and were $1.49 a dozen for large size. Horded up and bought two dozen.
