Cuban cigars and rum - cost question
« on: October 14, 2016, 12:47:22 PM »
Travelers can bring home as much as they want for personal use now, from any country:

So, how much in U.S. dollars (or Euros if you know) should one expect to pay for one Cohiba or a bottle of Havana Club rum?
$1 each
$5 each
$10 each?

I'm going to Germany in Nov so thought I would pick some up, just wondering about how much I should be paying? Thanks!

$0. Cigars are disgusting and you can buy rum in the U.S. already. You're welcome.

The key in htis is that it's for "personal use" only and the determination is always made by the US customs officer. It's illegal to bring these items back with an intent to distribute, and if you try to come back with 40L of rum of 400 Cuban cigars they're unlikely to believe you.

That said I'd skip cigars entirely (pleh!) and only bring back as much rum as I'd consume in a year or so, assuming it was cheaper in Cuba compared to elsewhere in my travels (i'm rather partial to rum from Belize that's both cheap and really good).
