co worker passed away
« on: February 26, 2025, 09:07:31 AM »
I had a co worker that I didn't know all that well pass away. He retired at 65 in December of 23. So he was retired barely over a year.

The job I'm at has a lot of people who really like working here and a lot of work life balance... so it's not impossible here to really want to come to work every day and still enjoy everything else outside of work.

He was a really great guy and really active.

So... just a reminder that nothing is guaranteed. I kind of assume I'll live to 90. No guarantees of that.

It's a reminder to me also that I really want to reach FIRE and go on some cool post FI adventures and get the most out of life.

I'm not waiting around til 65 even if I like my job and have a lot of free time.

There is a 30s or 40s song that talks about having fun because time is shorter than you think... It is a good reminder every time I hear it.

We had two die last year while still working.  One was 46, one 54.  I've wondered if knock-on effects from covid/long-covid stuff might be increasing the odds of kicking the bucket heading forward for many people.

Could be part of it, but you do tend to start losing people here and there in their 40s and 50s.

PSA: Get a physical. Wouldn't hurt to schedule a dental appointment, particularly if it's been a while for either.
