Bloomberg's OpEd on not running for President
« on: March 08, 2016, 01:06:59 PM »
I am not a big Bloomberg fan but I admit that I was in the camp hoping he would enter the race, but he is correct in his view that he is too liberal for conservatives and too conservative for the liberals and therefore wouldn't stand a chance.  This election cycle can't help remind me of Brewster's Millions to vote for None of the Above.....talk about a clown car.

He strikes me as terribly paternalistic, with his soda ban and his gun control stances.  I want a candidate who is going to treat me as an adult.

I agree with this sentiment, but that's one of the reasons I say least shitty, not a preferred/great candidate

See the part I bolded. Both major candidates will be bolting for the center as soon as the primaries are over - one could spin that centrist position as an asset that makes him look like an attractive alternative to the major party candidates. The realist in me doubts he'd stand a chance without aligning with either the (R) or (D) camps, but if he could clean up the center third between polar opposite nominees it could be interesting to watch.

His gun grabbing means the right would NEVER vote for him, so he's right, all he'd do is steal from Hillary.

Eh, good point. Even more true, since it's not just "the right" that owns guns, plenty of liberals carry, too.

Yes, but it's a common litmus test issue for us righties.

Yeah, I don't think liberal gun owners are usually as worried about restrictions, anecdotally.  I grew up in a relatively apolitical hunting family, and I don't think they really pay attention to gun restrictions.  I dated a left-wing very serious gun owner (had antiques, owned 20+ pieces, gave demonstrations, hunted, bowhunted, went to the range, etc) who actively voted AGAINST the IRA at every opportunity.  Then I have some right-wing friends who don't carry or even own, but to whom it's still a litmus test of candidates.

I wonder if gay marriage tolerance is a similar lefty litmus test.  Like, I have no intention of ever marrying a fellow woman, but if a candidate devotes energy to opposing it, they're more or less out of the running in my book.

Individual Retirement Account or Irish Republican Army?

HAHA, good catch. Meant NRA.  I imagine he also opposed the IRA, although that was not a very relevant concern for him.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
