The idea of becoming Mustachian or growing your badassity is largely about making a personal change against consumerism and embracing life with less stuff.

Discovery Channel's The Colony.
Only two seasons, but real life people thrown into an Apocalypse scenario survival situation for an experiment by the government, and they use their wits and muscles to survive just fine without any cash (or inflation) or government officials by being self-sufficient, minimalistic, creative/engineering, and with many many how to's for team-projects/solutions.

Fight Club all the way. Breaking from the paradigm that our 'stuff' defines us/makes us happy... A slightly extreme way to break said paradigm, admittedly, but fun nonetheless))

I thought Instinct was pretty good, and it's definitely along the same lines as this community, but upon reading critical reviews it seems like I am literally the only person who has ever enjoyed it, so I don't know that I should recommend it. *shrug*

I have not thought about Instinct for years. I enjoyed it too. I remember at the time it was a factor in pushing me toward becoming vegan, it was a way I could stop being (as Anthony Hopkins put it) a 'taker' .

A few weeks ago on PBS there was a documentary(episode?) about some newlyweds who spent their honeymoon as a year camping and filming wolves in Idaho, it was called "River of no Return" or something like that. The wife had MS or rheumatoid arthritis but they still had this amazing adventure out in the wilderness without money or modern amenities. I wish I could find the video, the way they took care of each other and fearlessly took on such a huge task as camping/backpacking for a year was incredible.

That was it, thank you, the Internet at work was not cooperating. Mustachian and badass in the anti consumerist, spending your time chasing your values and building relationships sense, not in the sense of "how to get wealthy". Other interpretations may vary.

Fight Club would be my number one pick (and it has nothing to do with Brad Pitt...really, nothing :-)!). Most of the other ones mentioned here too. Probably a couple of comedies: Office Space and Joe Vs. The Volcano (The film is about a man who, after being told he is dying of a rare disease, quits his soul sucking job and accepts a financial offer to travel to a tropical island and throw himself, passionately, into a volcano. Along the way he meets and falls in love with a woman who shows him how to truly live). Another Brad Pitt movie where he is a climber who ends up living in Tibet for decades (can't remember the name - Seven Years in Tibet I think - but based on a true story).

Agreed, and it's the only thing to redeem Sean Penn in my eyes. I think he's not the great actor that everyone says he is or else his films are boring, or something. But he directed Into the Wild and I loved it.

I recently saw a movie from the 90s called "The Edge," starring Anthony Hopkins and Arec Bardwin and written by David Mamet. They get lost in the backcountry of Alaska and many badass things happen. Great acting, good action, and a little bit of manly philosophizing -- I enjoyed it.
Also I forgot a few of my other badassity-encouraging favorites: "Elizabeth" and "GI Jane." They have nothing to do with consumerism but both title characters discover who they are and go forth to kick much ass at their chosen lifestyle. Also "GI Jane" features both Demi Moore doing lots of intense crazy push-ups while looking super hot AND Viggo Mortenson as a poetry-quoting short-shorts-wearing drill sergeant. Lol.

Not a movie, but a TV series. I will take any chance given to me to scream about my love for River Cottage. Londoner goes out to a cottage, farms and raises animals. It's romantic and all, but about half the show is him saying, "What can I eat for free?" or " how can I earn an extra buck here or there?" It's all about resourcefulness, barterin' and the like.

The documentary "Happy" (on Netflix); it shows people from all over the world and interviews psychologists about what makes people truly happy. Some were people from Louisiana, some from Okinawa (with the highest concentration of centenarians in the world), some from Sweden or something like that. Basically it was about having good friends/family and not about possessions. The part about Sweden featured communal living. Similar message to MMM, YMOYL, etc.
I second whoever mentioned the one on Netflix about tiny houses. Also "Fight Club".
I remember "A River Runs Through It" being relatively mustachian; the book was as well (the author didn't start writing until he was in his 70's).

Thanks for the tip! I watched the first two episodes together and it's been really good so far. I like that they are demonstrating some practical skills like water purifying and electricity generation. I'll be interested in seeing how the rest of the first season of The Colony goes.

The South Korean movie Penny Pinchers is pretty good. I mentioned it on another thread last year. It was on Netflix at the time, not sure if it still is.

I don't know about the movie(although anytime when you are mostly living out of a backpack you're heading down a mustachian route) but there is a lot about doing the Camino that can be very mustachian.

I watched "The Good Life" on PBS in the USA when I was a child (although it was renamed "Good Neighbors"). I used to think that show was hilarious. Now it gives me all kinds of great ideas. :-)

"The Gods Must Be Crazy" is one of my favorites. A peaceful tribe is thrown into chaos when an airplane pilot throws a Coke bottle out of the plane, and suddenly everyone covets the Coke bottle and is arguing over it.

Quicksilver (just saw it last night). It's an absolutely ridiculous movie that makes no sense whatsoever, but it does have a certain Mustachian flare: all the protagonists ride bikes, and the baddie runs people over in his car.
There's also a really cool scene of a guy doing tricks on his bike.
