anyone have an electric car?
« on: October 01, 2013, 11:08:29 AM »

wondering if anyone here has an electric car...
what about electric car and no house to charge it in, for example if you live in a condo ...
how do people get around not having a charging outlet?

an EV will be my next car, but only because I have a house.

I would not purchase one if I didn't have a reliable way to charge it.

It would become a hassle and a headache if I lacked the means to regularly charge my transportation.

I car share but the fleet does have an EV which is an absolute delight to drive. So if you live in a condo (and this exact situation recently came up in my city) most parking spots had plugs (typically for block heaters - it can get cold up here). The owner was charging his car through the plug (not the fastest in the world, but it worked). Long story short - check with the specific condo corporation and ask them their policy regarding charging. If the entire building shares electricity I would give it a higher likelihood of working out in your favour. Alternatively you may need to have a charging station installed. A deal could be worked out with the building as they would likely be able to apply for some green energy credits (check your local and federal government).

The concept of a vehicle with no engine is incredibly appealing.  Gas savings aside, that's what I most want from a car.

I built myself two electric bikes (yes it seems the reproduce) which has meant I last filled the gas tank on my car on 1 September. I'd get rid of the car completely, but with a 6yr old to transport I can't do that. I've done all the calculations about doing an electric car, but the upfront capital needed is just too high and I'd rather keep that money in my investments. Now I'm playing with the idea of a hybrid bike/car replacement. Two wheels in front, one at the back, two seats in Tandem with a weather enclosure. It would be enough to move myself and my son around, even if it's raining, at about 1 third the price of a car conversion would make it financially viable. Now I need to learn to weld and work with fibreglass...

I have a little electric 'motorbike' (photo here: http://ebriel.com/love-wherever-you-are ) that takes me everywhere I need to go in this sprawling city, on a single charge. It's the perfect commuter's option within town. It's vintage at about 4 years old, cost under $200, and during the year+ I'll own it, will save me loads more in taxi fares (bus/subway cost almost nothing here).

This little bike has totally changed the way I experience the city, and daily life. Wish I could take it with us when we leave Beijing next year.

My plan is to build exactly this when I hit FI.

I intend to buy one of these (see attached) and swap the 250 CC petrol engine for an electric option. Then build a polycarbonate canopy.

Nope, I don't have an electric car; however, in future planning to buy one!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
