Anyone done INSANITY DVD by Beachbody?
« on: August 13, 2013, 08:48:48 PM »
I got this NIP via Craigslist for $60. I have done four days so far. I can see that I need to get something to help my knees with all the plyo work.

If you've done it, how did you like it? Did you have any joint issues with it? Did you follow up with Asylum? If not, what's a good sequel(for females)?

Isn't this essentially the same as Crossfit?

I thought insanity/PX90(?)/Crossfit were all essentially the same thing...

I've got a number of friends who swear by crossfit, but the gym/social/comradery aspects are pretty important, so I'm not sure they'd go for the DVDs.

I know nothing about these programs directly, I just go for bike rides... and am no where near as fit as my crossfitter friends.

I think crossfit tends to incorporate some barbell movements and is typically done in a group setting with instructors.  Not sure if they sell DVDs for it.

I do crossfit.  Not something I would recommend to anyone to do at home unless they are very experienced, or want to skip all the barbell movements.  Following a few crossfit blogs online and choosing bodyweight workouts is a great way to get a free workout that changes every day and you'll have a time to shoot for.  With good motivation, this will get your seriously fit.

I've done P90X, I didn't like it for a number of reasons (and I would not compare it to crossfit at all).  Insanity seems to eliminate those reasons.  I've heard nothing but good things about it.  Hope it works well for you.

I'm on day 2.... my knees are fine, do you use a yoga mat? You can get a pretty thick one from 5 & Below ( under $5 chain store).

But for me, I'm failing on the pushups... I get sharp pain in my right wrist so I'm back to using push up bars which alleviate that.

I used to get this.  I have (had?) a torn TFCC in my left wrist.  I used a set of "perfect pushup" things, or bars, or even just 2 dumbells on the ground.  If none of that is available, I did them on my knuckles instead of my palms.

It was really bad last year, and after about 9 months of babying my wrist, the pain is 99.9% gone.

Ah man! My high school used that DVD once a week for phys. ed. It was wonderfully awkward and really fun hahaha I remember being a little sore the next day but nothing horrible, and no joint issues. But then, I used to be in pretty good shape.. Maybe I need to grab those movies again.

It is all bodyweight exercises, but has been called the hardest workout DVD out there. However I think that now that Asylum is out, it's harder.

Calling it the "hardest bodyweight workout" is... what's that thing where a phrase doesn't mean anything, non sequitor? I mean, Insanity has breaks... you can just make it "harder" by not having breaks. Or doing the exact same thing for longer than the DVD runs for. There were some Soldiers in one of my units who got permission to use it for physical training, it looked like a cross between aerobics and calisthenics.

It's not the worst thing you can do with your time, though, if you just want to sweat and burn off some calories.

It really depends what your fitness goals are.  Insanity is a great cardio workout, but involves almost no resistance training.  Your body will burn calories (a lot) during the workouts, and that's about it.  What I love about P90 is that your body's metabolism will respond to the seemingly absurd amount of resistance training, so that you're burning calories throughout the day instead of just during your workout.  It just depends on what you want out of it; Insanity will get you in GREAT shape, but honestly I've seen more results in 3 weeks of P90X than I did completing Insanity twice.

Burpees!

Save money, time, and equipment.

Why burpees? (from my blog: http://joshuaspodek.com/burpee-overview)

  • They put me in the best shape of my life
  • Zero cost
  • Zero equipment
  • Negligible risk of injury
  • Can learn to do them in seconds
  • Documented by fitness experts as single best exercise
  • Under five minutes per day
  • Can do them anywhere, any time, in any weather
  • Don’t interfere with any other workouts
  • Can work at any level — just do as many or as few as you want
  • Many variations can work specific parts of body
  • They make you feel great
  • Teach discipline, dedication, drive, and focus

If you want to get ripped or build serious muscle they won't be enough, but for general fitness, you can't beat them. Add some pull-ups for your back and biceps if you want.

I do twenty every morning, twenty every evening, no exceptions. Do more or less as you want or need.

90% the value of all those dvds at 0% the cost.

I did not mind the first month of Insanity but quickly became bored with the workouts in the 2nd month. In more importantly, I did not like the results I was getting. I much prefer Tapout XT to Insanity. I also got excellent results from Rip 60.

"I mean, Insanity has breaks... you can just make it "harder" by not having breaks. Or doing the exact same thing for longer than the DVD runs for."
^This defeats some of the purpose, which is to have more of a HIIT-like workout.  You go extreme for a few minutes, then rest for 30 seconds before going extreme again.  In terms of calorie burning (and yes, ramping up your metabolism) that's technically the most effective workout style.

My husband and I both did Insanity and loved it.  He's done it 3 times now and I've done it twice, although it is my default winter workout to choose a video to do 3-5 times/wk.  Doing it with another person really helped us stay motivated, especially since he enjoyed the workouts I hated and vice versa.  I've had knee problems in the past and it started to bother me a bit toward the end of month 2 but not too badly.  Have you checked your form?  I hate to say it, but that can cause a lot of problems.

The one injury I got, the first time through, was that I tore the fascia in both shins.  I had to modify a couple of the stretches the 2nd time through but that solved the problem.

And as a woman, I felt that it built a lot of strength in me, particularly in my arms which tend to be weak and a bit flabby.  I could barely do 10 "girly" pushups when I started the 1st time and by the end I was almost keeping up with the videos.  I didn't lose weight, per se, (nor did I gain) but I lost a lot of fat and gained muscle instead.  Clothes which had been on the tight side when I started were on the loose side when I ended and the husband said he noticed a huge change in me.

That being said, I do understand that workouts often need to be tailored to individuals.  I think the bad reviews on here are simply because this workout style doesn't help every body type.  So if it's not working well for you, experiment with other workouts and try to find one more suited to your body type.

Mom to 5, I definitely don't follow the set schedule anymore!  I just pick a random video a few days a week and do it, mostly because I can't really workout outside during the winter.  But I change it up and in between doing the insanity videos I'll do yoga, or strength training, or running if it's not too cold/the air quality isn't crap.  It's nice to have the constant change, and I feel like I'm in much better shape from all the cross-training.  Plus, it helps me stay motivated to workout unless I absolutely can't fit it into my day, because I never get bored and I can choose my level of difficulty.  If I'm exhausted, yoga.  If I'm full of energy...you get the idea.
My husband did re-start the entire program at the beginning of summer, but that was due to both weight gain during the previous semester (he's getting a second degree) and fears of gaining sympathy weight, since I'm pregnant.  He wanted to get back to a good fitness level once again before getting into a maintenance routine.

If you make a fist and rest on your knuckles instead of an open palm, it takes a lot of pressure off your wrists.

I was gifted a copy of Insanity by a friend of a friend who didn't complete it and started it yesterday. Thus far I am liking it, it's brutal, but I'm forcing myself to push through as much of it as I can (taking breaks when I need to).

I haven't been exercising as much and could use a kick in the pants.
