A short vacation to Omaha
« on: March 18, 2022, 09:48:46 PM »
My guy and I never go on vacation; haven't in several years.  Was thinking it would be fun to visit Omaha, Nebraska.  It's only somewhere around 400 miles from us; a relatively short drive.   Would be an inexpensive 3 day trip with only two nights in a hotel.

They got a cool zoo there, union station museum and some other cool attractions. Also wanna go to Gorat's, the Italian steakhouse Buffet visits and get T-bone steak, double order of hash browns and a cherry coke :)  Visit the Hollywood Candy store etc..

My parents live nearby and Sullivan's Steakhouse is a favorite of theirs. It is pricy, but yummy!

As you said, the Zoo is phenomenal.

I really liked the Union Station museum.  The old railway cars was fun to see.

Also, depending on your interests and if you're coming the right way, the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in nearby Ashland, NE was interesting if you're in to that kind of stuff.

Yeah we'll have to check out the SAC in Ashland as well, thanks for mentioning :)

Looked up the hotel/motel prices and looks really affordable there.  Saw lots of them in $50-70 range.  We don't have a camper, rv nor tents etc.  So we'll just pay for a cheap motel, for like 2 nights.

If you like architecture, suggest you go to Lincoln (an hour away) to visit the Capitol building. It's a real architectural gem. Also check out the Holy Family Shrine in Gretna (it's en route to SAC which is in the direction of Lincoln). There's also a very cool speakeasy called Alice in west Omaha. The Boiler Room (downtown-ish) is an excellent restaurant. Omaha's Old Market is great too.

Have fun!

Sounds like we might need to make this a four day vacay instead of three :)

Why?  Why Omaha?

How far away are you from St. Louis? St. Louis is generally agreed to be a great tourist place. If you’re in the Midwest in Indianapolis is a consideration as well.

St. Louis is 380 miles from us.   Not too far as well.  We'll have to check that out another time.  Do a similar trip.

Why Omaha?  The town of one of the richest philanthropists in the world?  Who eats at a steakhouse we can also eat at? :)  Plus their zoo is one of the best in the world I hear.  That aquarium looks awesome.  But I only thought of going to Omaha because I knew it was relatively close and mainly because we love Warren Buffet.

When I was there a few years ago I made a point of driving the whole distance of Farnam Street... Call me a Buffet fanboy if you want.  Didn't see the man though. :)

St. Louis .zoo is #1. For real.

I Never go to the zoo, I think it’s rather boring, but if you’re into zoos THE place to go. Our botanical gardens are truly world-class and I’ve been to many botanical gardens.

And then,  We have a thing that no one else in the world has called “city museum. “It was built by a madman who loved architecture. It’s a crazy place. It’s for kids and adults and is really focused towards kids, but I tell everyone to go there before they do anything else. Plus, my city has have architecture. There’s no damn architecture in in Omaha.

Sounds fab! Definitely wanna go check out St. Louis sometime :)

We wanna drive by Warren's house :) See his modest little 6000 square foot dwelling :)  Eat a Tbone steak with two servings of hash browns and a cherry coke at Gorat's :)  Maybe drive by McDonald's on way from Warren's house eat a McDonald's breakfast sandwich :)  Get a taste of the life of a billionaire. :) haha.

Heyyyy I just went to City Museum in St. Louis last summer! It was awesome! And I live in Honolulu--so if I vacationed in St Louis, that's a pretty big endorsement, right?

we went to omaha for a wedding a few years back. we took our bikes and did a bit of riding around town. we had an airbnb near the gerald ford birthplace. we made it out to the zoo and a few breweries downtown and across the river to council bluffs. omaha isn't a place i would intentionally go to for vacation but it was nice enough and not bad for cycling.

Isn’t City Museum crazy? So very interesting..

The guy who started it, Bob Cassily, was my neighbor. He was part of the hard-core architecture salvagers who took pieces of buildings when they couldn’t be saved anymore. He’s well known for so many antics. So many! He and his wife-of- the-time Were artists. He worked with cement and big materials and made big pieces.

When you  drive around my neighborhood, Lafayette Square, you will see items cast in his studio and attached to our Victorian houses. He  Is well known for just forging ahead and making public pieces of sculpture without getting permission from the city or landowners, although he always did it on publicly owned property. One time he threw his body over a distinct piece of architecture that was slated to be torn down and he didn’t move for days. This eventually came down but it was drama for a while.

He started up City Museum as a place to show off architectural treasures and you can see what happened to it…now a fun place for families.

He died in an accident when his bulldozer turned over as he was building his new place called “cement land. “

As usual with Bob, there is drama surrounding his death because his now wife claims he was murdered and there’s big fighting over his estate and etc. His wife number two still lives in our neighborhood and wrote an autobiography. She was a former nun when she married Bob, and after their divorce has come out as a gay woman.

Quite a colorful family.

I watched a video of St. Louis City Museum.  No thanks, I think I'd feel claustrophobic :)

You don’t have to crawl into the tunnels! There are plenty of things to do and see. They have adult cocktail hours, for instance, or did before Covid anyway, free of screaming children.
