A long weekend in the Tillamook, OR area
« on: July 19, 2018, 09:56:44 AM »
Headed to Tillamook for 4 nights.  Anything I should definitely do/see/eat?

Besides an ice cream cone at the Tillamook creamery?

I'm on a diet, so even 1 is stretching it!

Day trip (25 miles) down to Cape Kiwanda, pack a lunch and climb the giant sand dune, loads of fun and if kids are involved they'll burn themselves out running up and down it all afternoon.

Wrap up the afternoon with a pint of tsunami stout at the brewery.

Just typing it out makes me want to take the family back down there!

I admire your fortitude. I don't think I could visit Tillamook and not spend the weekend eating cheese.

You're not too far south from Cannon Beach, though, and that's a place that my husband has wanted to visit for years.

Cannon Beach was awesome when we visited. I would highly suggest visiting there.

Great hiking in the area. Kites on the beaches are always fun. Exploring tide pools at low tide. There's some good stables that do trail rides up there. Cape Meares Lighthouse is cool.

Get the cheese ;) You can't pass up fresh cheese curds! They *just* opened the new visitor center!

Yeah, I saw that opened a month ago.  By any chance do they do fresh garlic cheese curds?   I had those at Ellsworth Creamery in Wisconsin in May and OMG!

Y'know, I don't remember! I think last time I was there they had out a regular, a white cheddar, and a pepper. Can't recall if there were others. I know Face Rock Creamery makes some KILLER garlic cheese curds though.

There's a very picturesque overlook on the coast just west of Tillamook.  It must be quite near Cape Meares Lighthouse.  Lots of cliffs and trees.  If I were going there with my son we would also visit the big trees in the area (https://friendsofcapemeareslighthouse.com/big-sitka-spruce).

If you do head down towards Pacific City, the Sitka Sedge natural area at the south end of Sand Lake is pretty neat. It is worth taking a walk out along the Beltz dike across the estuary and out to the forested dunes on the far end.

I love Manzanita & Cannon Beach, both of which are an easy drive for a day trip. Add in Hug Point & check out the caves & beach, & do some hiking. Love that area!

I second the Cape Meares suggestion. It's a beautiful part of the coast.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I might have a change in plans and need to stay behind to work on my condo to prepare it to sell, but I'm hoping to go to OR for at least 3 nights.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
