You can buy a village in Spain for $230k

http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2015/08/23/433228503/in-spain-entire-villages-are-up-for-sale-and-theyre-going-cheap

The show describes a 100 acre village you can buy in Spain for $230k. 6 miles from the beach! They are so cheap because they are far away from any jobs. Wouldn't it be great for 10 young retired families to go in together to buy one and start a community with shared values? We don't need no stinkin' jobs! Don't know about EU visa issues.

Tempting. :)

Following, but I can't seriously consider this right now.

It sounds like a great idea but...

People joke it's like nine months of winter and three months of fiery hell.
Not for me thanks!

That harsh climate is for the central plateau region. The article states that there are villages for sale in other regions as well, like the one shown which is $230k and 6 miles form the ocean.

Since you paid 1/2 the price of a 1bed apartment here, and presumbly you aren't paying nay property tax if you own the town - you could probably afford to travel somewhere else for the summer. Or buy a boat

I'm in.  Some of those places sound wonderful... and super inexpensive.  Only thing I'd be worried about is having access to internet and medical help.

You can buy 100 acre lots in Colorado for $50k.  I think I'd rather do that and build small/efficient homes on it.

There are a dozen houses.  How about ten of us chip in $20k each and we grab it and start a commune?   Spiff up the houses. Rustle up some cows for milk and cheese.  Goats, chickens, pigs, geese, dogs, cats.  Get a garden going.  Buy a bus for trips to the beach.

Buy a bus for trips to the beach.

Or put a few more grand in for a solar farm, and use electric transportation when needed + power the village.  The beach is only 6 miles away though, so a bicycle is suitable for that trip.

Costs to renovate houses will range from 20k-100K euro each, depending on size, state of disrepair, etc. Older houses will have very basic plumbing, and perhaps no electricity. Unless you're an EU/EEA citizen, there will be plenty of hoops to jump through to satisfy visa requirements.

I second the colorado ranch land idea. Make a bunch of passive solar houses and attract the survivalists who'll probably be quiet and leave you alone.

Well, I'd certainly be in for some kind of split ownership eco winter retreat. I'd love to do Spain, Portugal, or France, but my wife's pretty tied to Ontario. Somewhere drivable from here to snowbird would be awesome. Mountains would be good.
