Terry Pratchett - Horizontal vs Vertical Wealth
« on: April 18, 2017, 03:14:44 PM »
This came in my inbox today.  I didn't know Terry Pratchett had mustachian ways.

Love Terry Pratchett with all my heart. His wisdom is often shown by Samuel Vimes.

Yes! I was just thinking about that quote yesterday. It might be in the same book but Vimes also muses that even though his wife goes to fancy events with other rich people she just uses jewelry that's already stashed around the house from various deceased relatives so she actually don't need to spend much if anything on going out for the evening.

I too love TP with all my heart. I should go back and read slip of the keyboard again. In my haste I think I missed that diamond.

Having the horizontal approach to money is very powerful in so many ways. And still so uncommon.

His books are such rich and dense tales, I notice something new. I should reread them all this year as a general policy. His was a tremendous light in the world we lost. His first 3 books of the Discworld are pure hammered gold.

Excellent article! Hadn't heard of Pratchett before but plan on looking up his book that was quoted.

And is the author of the article a member here? He linked to one of MMM's spending reports in one of the last few paragraphs...

Oh dude...

If you think you'd enjoy comedy-fantasy then Pratchett is in the best there is, right up there with Douglas Adams. And calling it 'comedy' is a bit too dismissive, a lot of his stuff is high quality satire that has some deep introspective points behind it if you listen. He was one of the greats.

Seconded.

It's comedy, in places, but so much more.

If you choose to read, would start with his first one but starting at the orange nodes mentioned above would be fine. Truly a once in a generation author.

Thanks everyone!  I typically do not read that genre but will have to check it out now.

Don’t spend your life chasing numbers. Figure out how much you need, get it, and go read a book.

Love that quote!

Thanks OP! The vertical wealthy have been the ones I always felt such disdain for and now just feel somewhat sorry for. The horizontal wealthy were the ones I always admired with wonder and tons of kudos. I will definitely see if I can get his books at the library. Oh and Douglas Adams was just maaaaaaaad! One of my favorite authors.
