Thomas Sowell - The Nonconformist
« on: August 04, 2020, 07:25:27 AM »
I read this profile of economist Thomas Sowell: https://www.city-journal.org/thomas-sowell-race-poverty-culture

This stood out to me as rather mustachian:

Quote
Though his father died before he was born and his mother soon after, he nevertheless remembers his early childhood as a happy one. He was raised by his great-aunt in a house without electricity or hot water—typical for black North Carolinians in the 1930s. At the time, it never occurred to Sowell that they were poor; after all, they “had everything the people around [them] had.”

So much of what we "want" or "need" is because of what others around us have. This is a nice reminder to not keep up with the Jonses and that you don't need more to be happy.

Thanks for the link. I always enjoy listening to Sowell; I owe many of my economics views to him. And his life story is a great example of the American Dream!

There's a lot of Mustacianism out there in the world, even if people have never heard of the concept.
