The True Cost of an iPhone
« on: January 31, 2013, 04:21:49 PM »
This reminded me of MMM's style, even though it doesn't really get into the personal cost for the consumer:

It also contains a load of crap.  Start at the beginning:
Quote
Coltan contains a heat-resistant substance that can hold a high electrical charge, and is a staple component of every iPhone.

Wrong.  Coltan is a mineral ore from which tantalum is refined.  Tantalum is used in capacitors, which are used in virtually every electronic device, not just iPhones.  Tantalum ores are mined in many places, not just in the Congo.  As to the conflicts between various factions in the Congo and its neighbors, they were going on long before the iPhone was thought of, they'll still be going on when technology moves to something different. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coltan

*does jazz hands* Congo warlords! Suicides at Foxconn! Oh the humanity!

Yeah, there's a lot of problems I've got in regard to the iPhone... and some of the points made are valid to various degrees, but this reads like a fair bit of greenwashing propaganda designed to fuel moral superiority over not being a hipster Apple user versus making a true case against the device or any consumptive purchase of electronics in general for their very real problems.

Clever layout and use of HTML5, though.

And all other phones are made of pixy dust and recycled prius wheels.
Samsung sells more smart phones than apple, funny how no one ever picks on them. (and I do mean funny, I'm not bothered by the picking on iphone thing, just amused)

yes, I actually found it when looking at examples of paralax scrolling.

It did seem a bit like greenwashing propoganda, but the overall message of reducing churn and waste in the electronics industry seems pretty sound.

Agreed... but that's a message that should be leveled at all users, not just people stuck in the RDF.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
