Scott Adams (Dilbert): Happiness = Health + Freedom
« on: January 02, 2014, 07:51:17 PM »
Thought this was an interesting take on Mustachianism:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/read-this-if-you-want-to-be-happy-in-2014/2014/01/02/d96370f0-7192-11e3-9389-09ef9944065e_story.html?hpid=z4

He may be missing the early retirement train (focusing instead on getting a flexible schedule at work), but I think much of the thinking is very aligned, especially focus on larger life systems and prioritizing what is really important for maximum happiness.

True. I read it today and was amazed by his completely non-BS approach to life. A rarity in a mainstream publication.

Interesting, but he's wrong about at least two things.  A minor one: if exercising isn't affecting your weight, you just aren't doing it hard enough.

Major one, though, is that it's perfectly possible to have both excellent health and freedom (financial & otherwise), yet still not be happy.

Or you're building muscle and burning fat in similar amounts. I weigh the same as I pretty much always have but I'm much more fit than I was two or three years ago.

Sure, I was giving a short & simple response.  Even so, I'd think it's a good bet that even though you weigh the same, your chest & waist measurements have changed, so someone looking at before & after pics would think you've lost.
