Who knew that Patriots Tight End Rob "Party" Gronkowski was frugal? Good for him.

Every now and again you get these stories that come out about one of the tiny minority of highly paid sports stars who has it right. Only living off the endorsement money is genius level thinking compared with the way many sad and now washed up characters quickly burn through their millions. You get some that still drive ancient hatchback beaters, or limit their spending to only $5k per month whilst earning $600k per year. Daniel Norris (baseball is a good one). He lives in a van yet earns millions.

If I ever earned that much I'd play badly for one season and then retire.

I remember back in the mid to late 90s when I followed the NBA closely and it was on TV over here in the UK, I heard something about the average benchwarmer in the NBA got something like £150k a year. You basically get courtside seats and to hang around superstars and get paid crazy amounts.

A quick search on Google finds that some bench warmers in 2013 were getting much, much more than that:

I just hope these guys realise that although they aren't Michael or LeBron, if they're sensible, the can live a charmed life until they day, even if they have a short and slightly unfulfilling career.

Whenever I see stories like this I think of Jim Sorgi, an NFL quarterback who literally made two million a year holding a clipboard on the sidelines ... because he was Peyton Manning's backup in Indianapolis.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
