Retire early abroad, with just a suitcase
« on: August 06, 2015, 11:42:24 AM »
Great article about a US couple retiring to Spain.

I find this very inspiring, since I've lately been tossing around the idea of retiring overseas.

This is part of our RE plan in the winter months...once our beloved cat goes to cat heaven :(

But we plan to rent, not own, so we can be free to move around as we feel. Rents in many parts of the world, such as Spain and even in small towns in France and other European and Asian countries, are cheap and the cost of food is relatively low and quality is high compared to that of Canada. PeteD01 just posted an update on their recent move to Spain, and their rent is the equivalent of $500/month.

Would live to hear more from folks about this subject.

We are doing an exploratory trip at the end of September to see if Italy is a possibility for us in retirement.

Anybody else on that track? (meaning relocating to Europe)

Poland is going to be my home base after FIRE. Have a family apartment in Rzeszow that my parents plan to keep since we have majority of our family in the area. I will be able to stay there for months at a time for just the cost of maintenance/utilities/taxes. Dual citizenship is a huge plus as well.

Italy is a lot more expensive then Poland. Probably because it is on the Euro. We have been to both countries twice & really enjoyed the people, etc. My hubby wants to spend months in each location but I don't due to the language barrier which is more of an issue in Poland then Italy.

Polish millennials are quickly changing this. My parents generation learned Russian due to the occupation.

English is being taught from elementary school onwards, the language barrier is slowly starting to fall. Hopefully in another 5-10 years it will be non existent.

What's the COL like in Poland? I assume you would be withdrawing from your portfolio when FI'ed, so you would pay US income taxes. What about taxes there, if any?

I'm considering Portugal personally. Great lifestyle, low cost of living, no taxes for 10 years, and no taxes on pension payments eventually. Plus of course a great location in Europe.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
