Can people suddenly going to a baking soda solution and either having a big 'weird' hair period vs. no problems say if they've been shampooing every day already?  I feel like if you shampoo 2-3 times a week (my current frequency) and switch to baking soda, it should be easier on you than if you shampooed daily.

I started this two weeks ago.  I was washing previously with shampoo/conditioner every two-three days and am doing a baking soda/acv wash every three days now. I have seen no real difference in my hair- for good or bad. I'm going to keep doing it because it's cheaper and more natural.  And maybe I'll see a great difference in my hair later.  I took my empty shampoo and conditioner bottles and filled them with diluted concoctions. They have pumps and I can control where I put them. I focus the baking soda mixture on my scalp and focus the acv on the rest.

FYI, I have long, naturally wavy, normal hair with a dry scalp. I have also put some heat protectant (enjoy's smooth and shine) on the ends of my hair, and I'd like to find a natural alternative for that. Maybe natural argan oil?

Hope that helps.

Rashes can be caused by either something you are eating and allergic to or something you are putting on your skin.

Yes, I'm wondering if  the shampoo was causing  dermatitis, and it wasn't psoriasis after all. Doh!

Sure, I like to hear that you can't see a difference. I've been scared to try it in the middle of a semester of teaching, I don't want to look like a ball of grunge.

I have pretty short hair right now, and fine, I tend to think I wouldn't see a HUGE problem.  Thanks for the info.

I haven't seen a difference either. I've still got bottle of shampoo which I will use up, probably once I go back to work from my break.  but i'm keeping the no poo thing going for a few months just to see.  If I use the shampoo again, when it runs out, I'm not worried I'll have a breaking in period since i really haven't this time..

I used to have shampoo-related dermatitis too. Had coal tar based shampoos to keep it under control but that did horrid things to my hair, so I went short for a few years...

So, I used shampoo last night. And conditioner. BS/Vin worked fine for the last 3 or so weeks, but the vinegar smell in my hair was getting to me. I rinsed and rinsed and used essential oils but I still smelled vinegar. There was no major difference with my hair itself. My hair seemed slightly darker, maybe from the distribution of natural oils. But the tangling and the static electricity were out of control. My hair hits my shoulder blades, is coarse/naturally wavy, and it's always been a struggle to get it to look decent. I might alternate for a bit..I have quite a bit of shampoo/conditioner left so I need to use it up anyway.

For the people who say they smell like vinegar, how much are you using?  I used 1 Tbsp per cup of water and I can't smell it once I've rinsed it out.  Mine isn't a fancy brand, just generic ACV.

I used generic ACV. I kept it in a squeeze bottle in the shower, and when I was ready to apply I just did a squirt into my mixing cup and filled with water...If I guessed it would probably equal around 1TB/1-1.5C water? Or maybe I developed a super strong dislike of vinegar smells in the last few weeks. I don't know? I use vinegar to clean as well. Maybe it was just vinegar overload...

I find white vinegar has less of a lingering odour. That's one of the reasons I opt for that.

Well, I used shampoo today. I felt like my hair did not smell good.

I looked at my shampoo and noticed it contains a lot of essential oils, and then I recalled that one "shampoo recipe" I saw included essential oils.

Any recipes to recommend beyond plain baking soda? I am looking for something that will leave a very slight scent.

I've only ever put stuff in my white vinegar rinse... Like rosewater. Then if my hair gets wet it smells faintly like roses.

That is an awesome idea! A drop of lavender oil would be nice too, I find that it cuts the smell of vinegar a bit. Haven't used that combination for hair, but have done so for household cleaning.

I started using baking soda a while ago mostly for health reasons. But it doesn't really work for me - makes my hair really dry and impossible to brush and oily the next day. I tried different proportions, and it still doesn't seem to work. For the rinse I tried diluted ACV - but even with some essential oils it smells sour to me. Does anyone have suggestions for alternative methods? I heard some people using coconut milk mixture, but can't find the recipe.

Cool. Do you use the type of rosewater used in Indian cooking, or is it an essential oil of some kind? If it's the former, I have that in my kitchen cabinet.

Well, I'm still going with this and very happy with it. I'm using ACV but don't notice much vinegar odour, except if I get very sweaty: but I don't find it offensive. I asked the kids and they say I smell the same. If I want to style my hair I still use mousse/hairspray /blowdryer...seems to be just the same.  Until late last year  when I went AWOL, the hairdresser was lightening my hair. So this part gets very dry and like straw, but this happens using regular shampoo/conditioner as well. Usually when I have it coloured they put some super duper conditioner in with the dye and it fixes it. I bought a boxed rinse and put it through and it fixed that up. I am finding I am now brushing my hair a lot more and it seems thicker overall.

The rosewater is the stuff you buy for Arabic cooking, the same stuff which is in Turkish delights. I have no idea whether it is used in Indian cooking or not...

The how to hair girl blog has a lot of DIY hair tips for cutting, washing, etc. She does a coconut oil hair mask, and she makes a product with aloe vera that would be a heat protectant(I must be misspelling that as my phone wants to call it protestant).

OK, I have been consistently doing the ACV rinse instead of conditioner. It is definitely cheaper, and I am using the good brand (braggs). However, I have two issues. One is that my fine hair is tangling and harder to brush. I am planning to put honey in there next time because HTHG says it will help. She is my new best friend, and I want to go to her salon and have her give me more pointers. Lol. The other issue is that my hair smells like vinegar. If we load up in the van before it's completely dry, kids are commenting on how something stinks. Also, anytime I sweat for exercise, oh it smells of vinegar! So, I may end up infusing something into it because I don't love that.

I am not using shampoo alternatives, just conditioner right now.
I find rinsing acv out with cold water helps with tangles, something about the way the hair changes structure in cold vs. hot water. Weird but it works.

I'm back on reg shampoo/conditioner again. We went on vacation and I just used what was there. Overall, I liked the no-poo method, but my scalp was dry and flaky. I'd have to research a remedy for that before I did it again.
