I found this a fun article on how popular shopping second hand for clothes seems to be among ladies in government in New Zealand.

““I had a colleague the other day say, ‘Oh I love your jacket, it’s amazing!’. And I said ‘Oh, thanks, I bought it from an op shop’. He kind of looked at me quite shocked. [There can be stigma], which I think is completely unnecessary.”

The trend goes all the way to the top. Though the prime minister chose not to respond to questions, Jacinda Ardern is well-known for re-wearing her outfits. She has fewer than a dozen or so pieces on high rotation.”

I've always understood op shops to be something that trendy, upper-middle class urbanites do. Picking up a vintage dress from a thrift shop? I can't think of anything classier than that! It signals good taste.

I had never heard the expression ops shop before this article and am still not quite clear what it is.

op shop = "opportunity shop" = thrift store (US)

Here in Australia, some op shops are run by charities like the Salvation Army. Other "op shops" are just clothing stores that sell second-hand / vintage clothing.

Just a trivial point....
MP = member of parliament
PM= prime minister
I very much doubt our previous multi millionaire banker PM ( John Key) ever went op shopping, and our current PM generally wears NZ designer clothes. This article is stretching it a bit I think.
Probably because nothing much is happening here in NZ, and the Guardian reporter is trying to find an “angle” for a story.

I love that they mention sweater recycling. I do this a lot. It's a bit of work to take apart the sweater but I can get a higher quality yarn for less by doing it that way.

This is fantastic. Thrifting can of course be a frugal and environmentally-friendly shopping strategy for anyone, but it's pretty rare for people in positions to do it, or at least openly say they're doing it. Especially for their "office" clothes rather than just casual weekend-type stuff.
