Rob Carrick, personal finance columnist for the Globe & Mail (a major Canadian newspaper), posted a column this week suggesting that we might all save a bit more money if we repaired our stuff instead of throwing it out. He asked for people to send in their "repair success stories".

A good idea. I submitted this:

My wife and I bought a house last year than came with an electronic lock on the front door. It didn't seem to work as well during colder weather last winter and this winter it stopped working completely. At first I assumed it just needed a new battery but that didn't fix it. I took apart the locking mechanism and discovered it had excessive grease inside which was getting stiff in the cold. It works great since cleaning it. One less piece of tech in the landfill and an extra $120 in my bank account.
