Local event car-free badassity
« on: May 26, 2013, 12:03:28 PM »
Today is the famous Ski to Sea race in my town, where beer-drinking local couch potatoes in superhero costumes can compete against Olympians and elite athletes from around the globe in a 400-team, seven-sport relay race.  It begins at the Mt. Baker ski area and ends at the Bay.

A handful of teams have decided to go CAR FREE for the entire race, which means that half of their teams rode their bikes all the way up to the ski area yesterday, camped overnight, and THEN competed in their legs of the race.   I think this is pretty badass.  :)

Edited to add:  If you want a chuckle, check out the list of 400 team names on the results page.  There are some very awesome ones, and if it sounds like they might be in costume, they probably are.  One team does the race in thrift store business suits every year.
