Nice eg of how kids can contribute to an er lifestyle. It's not all just paying for preschool and karate.

Thanks for this article. I really enjoyed it. Our kids are transitioning to this selectively helpful age. They've both learned how to make a batch of brownies on their own and my son enters all of the codes for wifi access and setting everything up so we can watch movies through the wii. It sort of feels like when my mom would ask us to records something for her on the VCR. Of course, they also occasionally get mad and tell us we are mean and they hate their lives, so there's that.

I love it when our daughter loves to cook.  When she goes back to college after a break, she also leaves all sorts of interesting/weird food in the kitchen.

I got awfully accustomed to having someone else wash the car and change the oil, too...

So far, kid 1 loves gardening, sweeping, and art. Last night she wouldnt go to bed because she wanted to help daddy with his photoshop file. Less helpful was the mural on the wall, closet, and floor - she's in her green phase. Kid 2 still mostly just rides on looking cute.

Kids should become self-sufficient as they grow.
Kids should do things to help their parents -- it's part of being a family.

This is news?

I agree, I'm amazed by the low expectations parents have for their kids when it comes to being responsible for themselves.   Straight A students and all star athletes ... but they can't tie their own shoes.
