Thanks for posting the link!

Their house is lovely and feels very warm and inviting.  And I loved seeing the seedlings on the window ledge (although I would be a bit fearful taking them down).  I think I am going to get my seeds ordered today and hope that spring doesn't take too long to get here!

That was... kind of a weird article.

Very nice house.

But strange that it was an article that was basically like "here's someone's house."

IMO, YMMV.

Weren't most of the pictures published on the blog?  I know I saw many of them before somewhere, and that's the logical place.

arebelspy, house tours are a big thing on design blogs, like Apartment Therapy and Design*Sponge, mostly for inspiration purposes. They're great for websites because the content is slew of photos--call it the BuzzFeed model. There's little to no cost (time or otherwise) to produce.

I personally enjoy seeing how other people live.

Okay, makes sense. I haven't run across many of those, and I saw this was "Huffington Post," so I was expecting a news article.  Instead it was basically like "here's someones house."

Seemed odd.

Just me, I guess.

Yes, this is a totally normal thing on the internet. It is possible the readership of those sites is mainly female, which might influence your reaction, but regardless--it's a very common form of internet exhibitionism.

Yeah, I thought it was a bit odd too, but apparently the HuffPost Home editor really likes the blog and happened to see the post with some pictures of our home: http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/06/01/raising-a-family-on-under-2000-per-year/.

She contacted MMM to talk to him a bit and ask for some more pictures.

I guess the idea behind this particular post is to see how certain public people (like bloggers) live - what their homes look like.  And in this case, maybe to point out that you can still have a nice home and live on less (although I'm not sure the article pointed out that our house is paid off).  They put it in the Huff Post Home section and also the Personal Finance section.

You may see a more relevant post written by MMM on there sometime in the future.

Yeah, I did like that aspect.   Hopefully that will get some of their readers curious about the 25k spending, and they'll head over to the MMM main page and start increasing their own badassity.

Loved the pics. Though the article struck me as short.......it just sort of started then dropped off?

I love when people see what frugal really is vs what they think it is. I have had die hard frugals be disappointed when they see my home and the assume I am not frugal at all after seeing it. Then the non frugals expect me to live in a shack and seemed shocked that my home is nice LOL...... The non frugals see me frugal and tell me to get my husband a better job? Typically I learn we make just as much if not more than they do....  So being frugal implies we need MORE money???? That's what's exciting about articles and pictures like these.

I hope we get a lot of new members from this article :)

Yeah, I'm actually always surprised at how little traffic these big mainstream sites bring in.  There is a lot of content on those sites and it changes quickly, so that might be part of the reason.

It looks like the HuffPost article brought in 207 views so far.  Not a ton, if you compare that to getting mentioned on GetRichSlowly recently (that brought in 3906 views).  It makes sense though, as GetRichSlowly readers would be much more interested in this blog than folks that like to look at homes.  :)

Still, it's all good.

Is anyone else intimidated by how organized and uncluttered the MMM house is? Ms. MMM, is your house always that clean? I'm assuming you tidied up for the photos...Are you guys super-organized on a day-to-day basis?

That is one area I'm really trying to work on. We have kids and there are generally clothes, toys, and random crap strewn everywhere. I know you are a pretty minimalist family, and since you're both retired you have more time than I do to focus on the that kind of thing. Or so I tell myself; maybe you are just better organized than I am...

You beat me to it but I was looking at the pictures and thinking that the secret to badassity is a extreme case of analness - I don't think we could get our house to look that neat (as in model home neat) even for a photo shoot.  Maybe because we have three kids, but probably more due to we are not that worried about it.

The majority of those pictures were taken when we were trying to sell our house a few years ago.  So NO!!  Our house is definitely not always that clean.  Rarely.  I have a cleaning routine that I try to stick to (mostly decluttering) which works pretty well when I actually do it (which I'm pretty good at these days).

However, it's true that we don't have much stuff.  For example, we just have one couch in our living room instead of two.  Some of the people that came to see our house when it was for sale actually thought it was staged and that nobody was living there.  Or they seemed to think we didn't have very much stuff.  This is kind of funny because I still feel like we have too much stuff.  Also, our house is very big for us, so there's plenty of room for everything.

I think the key to having a clean house is not having much stuff AND having a spot for everything.  That way, when you clean up, it's really easy as you know where everything is supposed to go.  We mostly clean clutter by the way, the deep down cleaning doesn't happen too often around here, which is fine by us.

Haha!  We are both actually pretty messy.  I've been sick all week (with strep) and haven't been doing anything.  I should take a photo of our family room and playroom right now so you can see it....

Feeling a little better, but it could be staged to throw us off  - "Pete Mr MM, quick make it look messy." :)

and FWIW, if we were down for a week my kids would have destroyed the place.

Ha!  There would have been no time for that.  And, MMM isn't even here this week.  Our one kid is actually pretty tidy (1 vs. 3 is a big difference).  He likes things just so.  He also has the chess board all set up for when MMM returns.

(I wondered if it might be staged too... I think MMM is still out snowboarding in the Cascades, so Ms. MM would have had to stage it herself, maybe with help from the child...)

Thanks, Ms. MM, I do feel better! It's also good to know that when our children get older, they are more likely to build cities or play board games, rather than throwing the sofa pillows on the floor, unzipping them and pulling out the stuffing (I'm giving a visualization of my living room).

I posted before I saw this. I guess it helps to have a naturally tidy kid... I'm hoping that comes with age, but we'll see. Meanwhile I need to go home and get rid of some stuff....

Thanks MageyLou!  That's interesting that you say that about that picture.  We got it for $1 from our neighbor's garage sale.  She said that her mother had made it when she was a kid and she was a bit sad to see it go, but was happy that it would be nearby.

A tidy kid helps, my oldest is somewhat tidy and he also likes chess - so much so that he taught it to the neighber (both are 7) and they really like sitting on the front porch when playing.

I can tell you that visualization is not the difficult for me, as it is a nightly thing, except that the board games and legos and hockey stuff are usually mixed in the mess.

It might not be so much that we don't worry about it as much as it is that we surrendered.

haha, i think i paid about 200% more for mine at the thrift store. still a pretty good bargain.

she said she made it? huh. maybe it was a DIY kit in the 70s or something.

like your neighbor, i'm glad it still exists in my sphere and i get to go visit it sometimes. it's a real sweet pic :)

The big difference in cleanliness between that house and mine isn't that we have two extra children, it's that we have three indoor animals.  Filthy hairy animals, with muddy paws and winter coats to shed, and who lovingly greet me at the door every day with whatever handy objects were mouth-transportable from other rooms.

yes. even one little cat, like what we have, can be revolting. the amount of puke and fur that comes out of one little 11 pound being is almost unfathomable.

after he's gone, i don't think we'll be getting any more. i will just visit my friends' animals when i need a kitty fix. :)

We're on the same page with pets. We have two dogs and, until last month, two cats. Last month, we had to put down one of the cats, and she will not be replaced. We love them, but we are practicing pet attrition.

We also have the three kids, so you can only imagine what this place looks like most of the time. But, I will say that everything we own does have a home, so it's not too bad to tidy up quick.

Oh gods yes. I have indoor-only pets--they don't even puke--but the amount of fur they leave everywhere is incredible. You could assemble entire more pets out of it. I love them, but I only have a few more years before pet attrition and I'm looking forward to it more than I like to admit.

About the one couch thing at the MMM's: minimalism has made it so much easier to clean said fur out of behind everything.

Beautiful house (both in the spotless and slightly cluttered incarnations). The picture of the shower made me want to re-read the article on pouring a showerpan. :-)

Like arebelspy, I didn't really realize that articles showing other people's houses were a thing, but it's cool that MMM got some publicity out of it.

Haha, I had imagined that he's introduce himself as MMM even at conferences. Whoops, I forget he's a real life guy sometimes! :-P
My favorite's in the linked house tour article when they use Mustache as if it's his last name.

imagine him walking up to the bar: "Name's Mustache. Pete Mustache."

Loved the pictures and grinned at the beginnings of the complainypants in the comments there.  It's amazing what some people see and interpret.  Talk about "seek and thou shalt find."  I'm not even religious and that was what came to mind when I read one of the comments.

And in this case, maybe to point out that you can still have a nice home and live on less (although I'm not sure the article pointed out that our house is paid off).

Yeah, I did like that aspect.   Hopefully that will get some of their readers curious about the 25k spending, and they'll head over to the MMM main page and start increasing their own badassity.

Given the paucity of responses in the comments section, I'd say ... no. Talk about missing the point. From questioning the health of the Little Mustache to disbelief how anyone could have "income" without "work", those commenters represent the wrong path to financial security (and plenty of ignorant jealousy to boot).
