Having It All
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:28:14 AM »
For those of you following the "Having it all" debate/discussion prompted by Anne-Marie Slaughter's article in The Atlantic, this is a very welcome reality-check that touches on asking "Do I Have Enough?" rather than "Can I Have It All?":

Here's a link to the original 'have it all' article: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/07/why-women-still-can-8217-t-have-it-all/9020/

So inspiring.  Thank you for sharing.

MMM posted (awhile back) an anecdote / quote I enjoy regarding this topic.  From the John Bogle book called "Enough":
Quote
an actual conversation that occurred many years ago. Two famous authors, Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller are talking at a party hosted by a billionaire hedge fund manager. Kurt says to Joseph, “You know, this billionaire makes more money in one day than you made in your whole lifetime from your novel Catch-22“. Joe responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have… enough.”

I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

Whenever I wonder how people could live without things such as tomatoes and potatoes in the past, it prompts me to think about the essential things from the future that we don't have now.  Thirty years ago, the Internet didn't exist.  And now most of us consider it indispensable.

Honestly, I don't know how you non-time-travelers can even get by without a hoverboard.

It's a great reminder to me, as I find myself on this board mingling with people who have already FIRE'd (or are on the fast track to do so). I'm definitely far away from that goal, but I have so, so, much in my life in terms of meaningful and fun work, great relationships, and a comfortable lifestyle (by any sane person's definition :)
