Frugal FIRE Show
« on: March 19, 2014, 10:16:27 AM »
As you may (or may not) be aware, I recently started a Google+ Mustachian community, that then kind of took off once MMM tweeted about it.

One of the things that came out when we started this was a bi-weekly Hangout On Air show that is tentatively named Frugal FIRE. Sacha Chua and I recorded the first episode which is basically a rant about Mustachianism, and a bit about the show. Our second episode featured an interview with RootOfGood about what to do with your day once you have successfully caught FIRE.

The show airs live every other Thursday, and is posted as an event in the G+ Community. You can ask questions, watch live, and join us for a post show hangout to have slightly more personalized interaction with us and our guest. This is still an evolving thing, but right now we put up bi-weekly challenges that can be applied to people just starting out, or people who are well on their way. Keep that Frugal Muscle strong!!! Since I spend a good amount of my time reading and learning,  there are also book reviews, as well as Mustachian tools (like Mad Fientist's Laboratory, FIRECalc, etc) and guides. We have lots of different topics we are going to discuss, challenges we are going to issue, and tutorials. If you don't have the time to read every post, we hope this can provide you with a good overview of the basics of Frugal living, as well as an overview of what has been going on in the FI community around the web. Sacha also makes MP3s available of the show for offline listening.

The next one is scheduled for 03/27/2013, and we'll be hitting the basic challenges of starting out with Mustachianism (like getting your SO on board, the differences of Frugal vs. Cheap, etc), and how to overcome them...and by overcome, I mean beat them into submission. This will be the home of the show on the MMM forums, and I'll keep this thread updated with new episodes and news. Check out the Frugal Fire Show Page for the feed, or the Youtube Playlist of the episodes.

I've attached the sketchnote's that Sacha created during the show's for your perusal. Come check us out if you wish, and feel free to leave feedback, we're constantly evolving!

This is awesome!  I can't join, as I do not have google+ (and no desire to tie together my Google accounts with it), but it is real neat and I appreciate these being available on YouTube!

Episode 4 is scheduled for Tomorrow at 5:00pm MDT. You can view it live here. This episode is going to be walking through a bunch of the different tools out there for people trying to catch FIRE.
We will be discussing/walking through:
  • FireCalc
  • CFireSim
  • Mad Fientist's FI Laboratory
  • Mint

Look forward to seeing you there. We will also have an after show where everyone can participate.

I've attached the sketchnote's that Sacha created during the show's for your perusal.

Okay, her site sucked me in for hours yesterday.

Now I want to sketch like she does when I grow up!

And then (next step), turn them into videos like the Mustachianism in 5 Minutes one.

She has something like 8 years of articles, and I haven't run into a bad one yet. I actually showed her the Mustachianism In 5 Minutes video, and she liked it. She does rock doing it live though. In case you weren't aware, we have general topics laid out, but the show isn't scripted out. We don't even know the order in which we discuss things. She still manages to make the sketchnotes useful.

Consider it done!! I think we are going to have Bakari as the guest on the one two weeks from today, so that will be fun!!!

Neat.  I haven't been able to watch (metered internet) so I wasn't sure if she was doing them live on-air or providing them afterwards.

The live sketching stuff does give me a fun Financial/MMM related business idea I may work on.

I remember about the metered internet. I wasn't joking about mailing you DVDs if you wanted. :-)
Yeah, her camera is on the sketchnotes, which she does as we're discussing stuff. Amazing talent!

So it turns out that all of my testing was for naught. Super short episode, but I'll re-record and post a longer one sometime this weekend.
It's available here. The updated one will be here too. Screen sharing broke so the walkthroughs of Mint, FI Lab, CFireSim, and FireCalc didn't work. I promise I'll get it fixed. :-)

Have watched the first two, and really enjoyed them.
Will get to the next one (s) soon.  I have crappy internet (welcome to australia), which often keeps buffering, so it can take a while longer to get through an hour.  That would be my only feedback..a bit shorter would be easier. But that may be just my problem.

Thanks for the feedback. We're thinking about also starting a Frugal Spark sub show, that is either

  • A broken out topic from the main show
  • A highlights from the show
  • Smaller/More High level concepts relating to Mustachianism

It's a work in progress, but I'm glad you are enjoying the shows!!

Hey Jordan, when is the next show scheduled?  I'd love to join the live hangout.
Next show we have Bakari as the guest, and it's this coming Thursday, 04/24/2013.

The Hangout on Air (meaning you can watch it live) is at 6:00 MDT. We have an aftershow event that anyone in the community can join in at 7:00pm MDT, and that's where we all just kick back, discuss things, etc.

The link to the aftershow is https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0mat5g1ss7i060mno7v9m99rq8 and the link to the Interview is https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/ckt25n194ljbojb6fmtjc0s0mro. If you have any issues, you can PM me, or just comment on this post, since I get notified.

thanks jordanread,

It is good to see some mustachians take the lead and start expanding upon the ideas from this blog and introducing new content.  These days it seems MMM spends more time fixing houses than having a public presence on the blog.  This forum has really exploded with more personalized interaction and discussion.  It seems there are a lot more new people just learning about the movement, but need somewhere to be heard and interact.  There are lots of areas of mustachianism and reaching FI that could use more explaining, i.e. teaching people how to implement these ideas more practically.  Good luck.

Also, if you join the G+ community (link in signature), it will do the same thing automatically.

Right now, we do have some of the episodes available for audio download, and you can get those at http://frugalfireshow.com.
We did just have some changes happen, so we are going to be providing a couple different things going forward. The main page will be a playlist on my YouTube channel, but the domain is purchased, and will contain a few of the things below:

  • Structured topic based clips on interviews (available separately from the actual show itself)
  • All videos available in mp3 format (I really hate iTunes, but am looking for a way that people can subscribe to it automatically)
  • Transcripts of each episode available shortly after the show airs.

So obviously I have been slacking in this arena, and I apologize for necro-posting. However, the show will pick back up at some point this year (there are a reason the really successful shows have entire damn teams of people doing post and live production changes...that shit is hard). I've actually recently started doing some practice things for particular segments of the show. The segment that I've been working on lately is the Mustachian Meals bit. Every episode, there will be a particular dish or meal (I got the idea from the Poblano Rings post in JSs journal), but I'm going into full steps, preparation hints and tricks, and the cost of ingredients (and the per serving costs as well). Possibly some macronutrient details at the end, but I'm not sure. I now have 3 different videos up, and I'd like to know what you would like for this particular segment. Right now I'm not going into the steps, just trying to figure out good ways to monitor the progress of the meal.

The playlist is available on youtube, at this link.

Thanks for the motivation. I'm having a few difficulties to overcome now that it's a solo venture. Sacha wanted to do some other things, and what's the point of FIRE if you feel obligated? I'm just letting my perfectionism get the best of me sometimes (especially since I am really bad at graphic design and stuff). I might do some test runs once I have the vidBlaster software, and I'll keep this updated too. If you are part of the gplus mustachian community, you can join in and have fun if you want (at least during the tests)

I know it's a necro post, but this thread was for this show specifically. 2017 is going to be a good year for this show, and I'm just going to let it be useful, not perfect. I've procrastinated way too much on this.

Anyway, the site is up, and hopefully will be updated more often. First new show will be done in January (probably 2nd or 3rd week), will be live, and the topic will be the basics of FIRE, including the math, and a review of the trinity study.
