Mustachian with $7M of gold coins
« on: December 20, 2012, 01:36:36 PM »
This was an article on  Yahoo today, about a mustachian who had $7M of gold coins in his house.  http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/calif-teacher-inherits-recluse-cousins-7-million-gold-192002163--abc-news-topstories.html

The mustachian part of the article is this:
Quote
Samasko had only $200 in the bank at the time of his death, according to the Las Vegas Sun, but had stock accounts totaling in $165,000 and had been living off of his investments.

Grover said one of his first thoughts upon seeing the thousands of coins was, "What was a guy like this doing with his kind of money in just a regular house?"

He described the house as a small, 1970s three-bedroom home of about 1,200 square feet with orange shag carpeting.

It would be really interesting to know how long this man had been living off his investments, and "living off his investments" included periodically cashing in some of the coins.

My guess is he had a lot more stock/other investments at one time and had been selling them and buying gold.

I live fairly close by, so have seen ongoing news accounts of this.  From what I've read, I don't think he was a Mustachian, more like a miser/hoarder.  Apparently inherited the money from his mother (with whom he lived until her death), and was a recluse whose body wasn't discovered until a month or so after he'd died.

There was a guy in I believe it was Vancouver that had something like $800,000 in silver in his house.  word somehow got out and one day he lost it all to a home invasion.  Insurance doesn't cover any of it in those situations.

I wonder if we'll ever know how much was really in there before the authorities were finally notified.

I had a sneaking suspicion that his reclusive nature was the primary reason why he hadn't spent any money.  It sounds like he had a lonely life, and it's sad that it took so long for anyone to go check on him.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
