A 900 point plunge today!  Woo!  Buy!

No surprise.  It's the end of August.  There's historically a slump this time of year.  I used to time my buys for end of August until I calculated that investing earlier and riding the smaller ups/downs was better than holding as cash and then investing low.

Yes its pretty wild what is going on with the stock market right now.  I personally dont invest in  stocks but seeing stuff like this just scares me even more away.  So volatile!

why not?  Or perhaps a more pointed question - what do you do with your savings?
It's extremely "volatile" only when you consider short time frames.

If anyone is wondering why:  Today:  The Dow plummeted 531 points, concluding its worst week since 2011.
So far my reaction is "meh".  A correction (falling 10% from a recent high) happens on average about once per year.  As I write this the SP500 is -1.34%.  Certainly not earth-shattering news.  If it gets 10x worse we might remember this in 10 years.  If this is as bad as it gets most people won't remember thisin 10 weeks.

@nereo

Im all about real estate.   Im making over 20% returns on all my properties.  Real estate is just my love and that is how Im giong to reach FIRE!

I mean I do have some stock options that my day job gave me and they are great but I dont really count that as investing in stocks since they were given to me dirt cheap!

Maybe some day I will dip into stocks but I need to learn a lot more about it.  If anything, I would be into dividend stocks for the cash flow.

Cool.  20% returns is fantastic if it holds through bull and bear markets.  I'm the opposite - I'm invested almost entirely in equities (low cost index funds) but later in life I'd like to own more properties... actually we're tentatively planning on converting out existing home into a rental the next time we move.
Not sure why you wouldn't count stock options just because they were given to you dirt cheap - sounds like you have a great paper return on those.

If you want to divest into equities I'd encourage you to start first with a low-cost index fund.  There's nothing 'magical' about the cash flow generated from dividend stocks (it would be effectively the same if the company let their share price increase by buying back stock and/or adding to their business).

Yeah... the lunar eclipse caught everyone by surprise (sarcasm).
Didn't really notice the financial doom though...

hahahahahaha.... Ok potential financial doom for the cowboys.  OTOH, i'd argue here it's a zero-sum game, with some other team gaining from the double-shock to the Cowboys.  Also, think of all the extra QB jerseys the Cowboys can sell now that their fans need something other than "ROMO #9" emblazoned on their backs.  Could actually spur spending, ya know?

Anyone else?  What was the "Financial Doom" in september?

I'm a red panda

I'm not worried because the world is going to end in 2012 according to the Mayans

Dear Jonathan Cahn, Mark Biltz, John Hagee, et al-

Although we are clearly entering the end times, your flawed logic, reasoning and scriptural understanding has lead you to identify and predict the wrong harbingers. We're not dealing with blood moons, sabbath years, or financial collapses... truly, a harbinger of the end days will be the coming 2015 Cubs pennant from a wildcard slot.

Best of luck next time, and give Hal Lindsey my regards.

Shalom,
