Feedthepig.org
« on: March 15, 2013, 11:52:45 AM »
I haven't played around too much, but I just heard a radio advert about feedthepig.org
The ad was something like,
"Brewing your own coffee at home, making your own meals, or even Biking instead of driving can add up to 1000s in savings."

The website seems kind of cool too.  They have a 5% challenge which challenges to save 5% more and gives alternatives for what it could result in.

The piggy bank/human hybrid scares the shit out of me. I can't stay more than 5 seconds on this website.

Did their quiz . . . and have to say that I disagree with almost every question on there.

- I don't believe in 'shopping addiction'.  I do believe in 'impulse control'.
- Paying with cash is stupid if you get a percentage of purchases back on your credit card.  You're just throwing money away . . . and if you're not an idiot, you realize that cash/credit are both just purchases.  Neither should effect your buying habits.
- The list I bring determines what I buy, not the size of my shopping cart.  Carrying in my four panniers means I search for the largest shopping cart every time . . . because I have to fit the groceries and my bike bags!
- I talk with my wife about finances every tax season.  The encouragement to avoid this because of stress is stupid.
- I strongly believe that given the option of spending 20$ now, 110$ in the future, or neither . . . NEITHER is the correct option.  Not 20$ today.
- I think that if you want to save, you should start immediately.  Saying you want to save and will start the next time you get a raise is procrastination.

Between the poorly thought out quiz answers and the creepy pigman mascot, I think I'm done with this site.

That's too bad.  I haven't done much with the actual site, but the radio ad was pretty good.  I hear ads about saving 10% or skipping the coffee, but rarely anything extreme like bike commuting.

Dear God.  I went to the site for the first time just now and shuddered.

LOL....when I first read that, I thought "WTF??? Is Khao super sensitive or something?".....until I went to the website.

Yikes! Talk about poor marketing insight! Why not just make the damn spokesman an actual piggy bank that looks more normal? :)

Aw no way you guys, when I first saw the ads for it on hulu years ago the freaky pig man was my favorite part!  I mean, here's the thing, once you see one of those ads, you don't forget it.

I never really found it disturbing. Weird...

The podcasts are a really good resource -- they're the kind of thing I'd recommend to a friend who wanted advice on getting their financial house in order but who couldn't handle a facepunch.
