Even NBA Ballers can be mustachian
« on: March 19, 2013, 01:33:43 PM »
I heard about this on the radio this morning.  Apparently NBA hall of famer Adrian Dantley puts in an hour a day as a crossing guard to get free health insurance.  He's saved millions from his NBA days and to me this sounds like just a fun thing he's doing in his retirement that also happens to be a really good financial decision.  The author of the piece and the radio guys I heard talking about it don't seem to quite get the whole idea of a non-sedentary retirement, but I think it'll be pretty obvious to mustachians.

I heard on sports talk radio last week from the father of NBA player Klay Thompson that he receives his son's pay check to manage his money for him.  The father, a former NBA player himself, then pays his son's fixed expenses (no mention of how much) and then gives his son an allowance of only $300 per week.

His son, Klay, is 23 and makes $2.2M per season...he's good to and will probably end up making $60-80M or so over the course of his career.

Given his extremely high income level I think "only" having $1200 a month in discretionary income is very mustachian for young Klay.

I think this is a positively beautiful act of humility.... I know people who would rather sit at home and take unemployment then to take a job they like less than their last one. This guy is a star and he'd rather be an asset to his community and do something practical than to sit at home and rest on is laurels. Awesome story, thanks!

That is so cool! I loved A.D. in his playing days during the Pistons "Bad Boys" era. Thanks for passing along the story.
