I do not believe that there is some focused conspiracy theory behind keeping the 40-hour work week but this article has good points.

He didn't work for 9 months, now he's full time. What's his average workweek for the past 5 years?

Just because I might work 60 hours one week doesn't mean I work 60's all the time. If you consider average weeks he's actually beating put most people.

This is the internet. If you've ever done any overtime, it can be said that you 'worked 80 hour weeks for years'.
