Article in Westworld about raising kids to be savers
« on: September 20, 2012, 09:49:58 AM »
Westerworld is a monthly publication put out by the Alberta Motor Association that every member receives. Normally they cover exotic vacation destinations around the world as well as local festivals and attractions around Alberta so I usually don't pay much attention to it, but I was thumbing through an issue during some downtime and came across an article that I thought was very reasonably written:
Bringing up Savers
The article talks about techniques to get your kids interested in saving money rather than becoming financial illiterates. Some key points include starting them early, giving them an allowance rather than buying them things, teaching them about how credit cards work before they're old enough to have one and why you shouldn't carry a balance, and most importantly setting a good example by having your own finances in order. While it doesn't promote things like FI/RE I think it is a step in the right direction.

Another blurb in Westworld that caught my eye this morning is a very basic primer on Cyclist-Motorist road sharing, to which I can't find a link online at the moment. It was brief but suggested to cyclists that they should ride in traffic not on sidewalks (including switching to the left vehicle lane to make a left turn), make themselves visible, follow road regulations, etc. and that motorists should treat cyclists as they would other vehicles, pay extra attention when changing lanes through cycle lanes and when opening doors, etc.
