A bit ironically, MMM's New Yorker piece followed an article the previous week that documented the lives of rich Chinese girls in Vancouver and their single-minded devotion to spending as much money as possible on luxury goods. It seems they have the money, thanks to dad, but the contrast with MMM values is extraordinary: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/02/22/chinas-rich-kids-head-west

Globalization means it takes the Chinese in Canada to live the American dream.

I just love the name of the show: "Ultra-rich asian girls of Vancouver". I can't put my finger on why, but it makes me laugh way more than it should.

Not entirely un-Mustachian if by Mustachian you mean the assorted obsessions of forum dwellers:

“They buy properties without hesitation,” he said. “It’s very cheap in comparison to, let’s say, New York, L.A., Hong Kong, or Japan. First, it’s very economical to buy properties, and then, second, these folks have so much money, they want to diversify and put it in a country that is safe.”

I bet that's what it was! It's just such a... specific and yet clunky sounding title. Perfectly Porn-esque.

  • I've been told to be like water.
The article is actually pretty fascinating. Despite all the abundant consumerism displayed in the article, this quote from one of the women is pretty telling:

Quote
In China, I’m treated like a naïve child, and sometimes I feel like an alien.” Pam and many of her friends, having emigrated in their teens, exist between two cultures. Canadians, and the West generally, could be inscrutable. The cultural capital that their parents had hoped would be theirs was elusive. But having been away from China during years of dizzyingly rapid change made them foreigners there, too.

Money does not equal happiness.
