6 steps to making mini-retirements a reality

An article about taking mini-retirements a month or so at a time throughout your working career. This can go either very mustachian or very un-mustachian but I figure with this audience I'll put it here instead of the Anti-mustachian Wall of Shame

I like the idea of mini retirements. Though for me, one month off is really just a regular holiday. :p  I guess I'm kind of on a mini retirement right now, it will probably last at least 6 months. Possibly longer. I'm currently flirting with the idea of a work-and-holiday schedule that goes like 1 year on, 6 months off, or something similar. That could be quite nice.

How exactly do you pull that off? I assume that you work for yourself? Because no employer I know would allow you to do that...

Mini-retirements can be an excellent idea, but a month really is only a long-ish break from work. My wife and I "retired" a few years back to spend time traveling. We knew it would be for an indefinite amount of time and we ended up lasting about 10 months before we grew tired and wanted to go home. It's an incredibly enriching thing and doing it when you're younger can allow you to do things that you would not be able to do later in life.

It's only a fanciful thought at the moment, but I imagine it would be possible if you're not picky about jobs, and career progression isn't important. So for each of the one-year-stretch, I could well be working for a different employer each time, in whatever job I can get my hands on. Of course it may be easier said than done - I may have a difficult time getting any job at all! What makes me feel okay about taking this risk, is that while I don't have enough stashed away for retirement, I do still have enough to last for many years.
