Check it out, see what this fellow did with his front lawn.  I can't think of a lawn having a more epic Moustache.

I intend to do the same think to my house just in the backyard though. I have to give him props for this though.

That's awesome. I did a similar thing on a much smaller scale in the patch of gravel on my front yard. I could only fit a couple of planters on it though. I still got a load of beans, spinach and rocket (arugula). Brightened up a normally dead space as well. The neighbours were quite interested as well. It helped forge some relationships with them as well, where before we would just nod and say hi, now we have actual conversations. So not only food but bringing communities together :) Win, Win

Same idea here too. I've FB shared this with my family to soften them up with the idea. They'll be relieved when I tell them it'll be the back yard not the front!

I don't know if it's the same guy, but a man from LA did a TED to TEDX talk about his urban garden and gave away a lot of the food to neighbors who needed it.

To do that--giving away food--is one of my dreams. We get a lot of foot traffic on our street, and I bet people could use the food. And beets and carrots are pretty easy for me to grow!

Those of you wanting to do only the backyard for aesthetic reasons might google potager gardens.

This is awesome!  I plan on having some sort of garden when we eventually get a house. Not sure how long away that will be though....

I would totally do that if I lived on a smaller lot in town.  There are actually quite a few front yard veggie gardens sprouting up in the trendier part of Boise.  Our septic tank is the the front of the house though, so we're sort of tied down to keeping a small patch of grass over it.  However, we're slowly reducing our amount of useless, wasteful lawn - front yard will eventually be xeriscaped, including low-water, no mow grass where we need it, and native shrubs and grasses over the rest of it.  About half of the backyard has already been converted to an edible garden, and the side yard will be turned into a pumpkin patch this spring.  My philosophy is:  if I have to water it, I should be able to eat it.

I've seen this done before with the home owners letting neighbors enjoy some of the harvest. I think its a fantastic idea. And a great way to build community.

I wish I could remember the name of the project but I read about an artist who started a movement in a couple of neighborhoods to have front yard gardens and the people who participated all reported have a stronger sense of community and getting to know their neighbors better because they were spending time in the front yard and not just the back. Plus all the food!

We participate in a program where neighbors' yards work together as a larger farm. You donate land and/or labor and receive a CSA in return. Any excess is sold by a local grocery store and the proceeds are used to offset the costs of soil, compost, and water.

I had a professor who did that with his yard, but just because he wanted to (there was no publicity involved).  Of course, he was a professor in the Horticulture program...

This is my plan for half of the front yard (the other half is a wild flower garden to encourage the bees, birds, and bugs!).  I can't wait!

Food not Lawns, but even Plants not Lawns would be sufficient!

I've seen a lot of this kind of thing going on. Check out youtube and you'll find lots of videos from different people about what they did and how and why.

I see this alot in my town (Durham) and know a couple people who have gardens like this (think every square foot is being used). I'm impressed when people can do that, for me the combination of a very small lot with lots of trees, and lack of green thumb has prevented me from doing something of this sort, other than the occasional plant in a pot in the few sunny patches.
