"Buy nothing" project
« on: March 25, 2015, 11:59:35 AM »
Disclaimer: not affiliated with the project, a colleague just sent me a link. I also search for it in the forum but didn't find a thread about it, apologies if this is a well known thing around here.

I was sent a link by a colleague to the "Buy Nothing Project", a "craigslist-like" system but where people choose give stuff for free. My application for my local facebook group is still pending, but wanted to know if people knew about this, and if they have good/bad things to say about the project:

I belong to my local group. Thus far, nothing of interest has come up, mainly just a bunch of mom's swapping baby stuff. No babies here, so not much use to me. I'm hoping as the group gets larger and summer comes, there will be more than just mom traffic on there.

It's no hassle for me, so I keep their notifications showing on my feed. There are a few parasite types that show up occasionally asking for ridiculous items (new ipad, anyone?) or telling a long drawn out sob story in an attempt to get donations, but the mods are pretty good at shutting those down.

Personally, I've had better luck on Nextdoor.com, which is like a neighborhood Facebook. Our neighborhood is really active on there, so neighbors are constantly posting things they dont need or asking to borrow/receive items. There's also the sharing of general neighborhood news, crime check info, events, and other useful stuff. Not mention the it's really improved our neighborhood culture/friendliness level. Someone in the neighborhood discovered it and put fliers on everyone's door over a several block radius to encourage sign-ups.
