Title: Project Fi Referral Thread
Post by: DarkandStormy on September 25, 2017, 01:49:55 PM
Trying to tread lightly here, but I see Ting has a 12 page referral thread going so far.

Thought I'd start one for Google's Project Fi service (couldn't find one using the search, so I apologize if I'm duplicating anything!).  I've used Project Fi for about 10 months and haven't had any issues.  I average about ~$33/month cell phone bill and that's with unlimited talk & text.  About to use the international service for the first time next week as well.

It's a pretty simple set up - $20/month for unlimited talk & text, data @ $10/GB after that.  No slowing of data, no caps, etc.  Project Fi taps into the T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular networks - whichever one is strongest where you are is what Project Fi will switch to.

https://g.co/fi/r/THK0WX <- Get a $20 credit by using this link!

Any other Fi users, feel free to post your referral link or let us know how you've enjoyed the service.

Why not! https://g.co/fi/r/VAW0PV

I love Fi. My average bill each month is under $20 (I'm on a group plan so it's $15 base for talk/text). I was previously on a prepaid T-Mobile plan for $30/month so switching to Fi isn't really saving me a ton, but it adds the Sprint and USCellular service areas on top of what I had with T-Mobile so coverage is way better in my area at least.

I'll bite:

https://g.co/fi/r/UUD5AV

My average bill is about $28 a month.  Helps being surrounded by WiFi all the time.  And it's also helped me to disconnect.  When I'm not on WiFi, I leave the data off unless I need something.  I don't sit there browsing non stop.  My fiance will be joining my shortly.  Our combined bill should be roughly half what one of us was paying alone.  It's crazy.  And they just announced newer cheaper Android One Moto X4 for those who don't want to pay for the more expensive phones.  That'll pay itself off in savings in no time.

This is a good call - who wants to join my "family?" Haha.

For me it was a toss up between this and a T-Mobile plan, so far this has been working out great, other than one month of high data costing me an extra $15. International travel was seamless.

About to use the international service for the first time next week as well.

Forgot to update - international service worked great.  Took about two minutes to switch over and then it was like using it at home.

After 30 days you will get $20 Fi credit.

I have used the service for about a year, have average monthly bill about $26-28. Also pretty cheap for international calls.

I love google fi, I'm on wifi most of the time, when I'm not, I want good service. Works perfect for me, better coverage than I remember having with Sprint, Tmobile or Verizon.

I've used the service for close to a year and a half in Denver. I have data saver on and pretty much pay between $27 - $32 a month. I recommend it for those that don't really use data!

Thanks for the feedback on international use.  I was curious how well that works.  I've been on Project Fi for almost a year and my phone bill is much lower than before - and that includes paying for the phone!  It's a great option for people who are on wifi most of the time.  I actually told my sister and her husband not to switch because they are terrible about not using wifi and the data costs would've eaten them alive.

Another frugal tidbit for those considering...  When you buy a Project Fi phone, you can get it financed interest free.   I easily could have paid upfront for my phone but I couldn't pass on a free loan.

Here's my referral code and thanks in advance to anyone who uses it:  https://g.co/fi/r/R7R3JC

$20 credit for both of us...

I use it in Dayton, OH and had a ton of call drops with my last phone (Nexus 6P) but with my new phone (moto x4) I get great service.  I'm assuming it was just due to the phone antenna or something.  I also used it in Canada and Australia for texting and data... worked like a charm!

I turn mobile data off unless I absolutely need it (looking up directions, for example).  The bulk of my time is spent at home and at work - both have WiFi.  I've started downloading podcasts ahead of time to listen to.  I've gotten my monthly data usage down below 0.3 GB the last 4-5 months.  My highest bill in the last 6 months or so was like $26 I think.

I am still on the Nexus 5X, though.  It's about time for the boot loop to rear its ugly head, so I'm starting to research the next phone.  I think the Pixel 3 is due out in October, so I could go super new with that or see what the Pixel 2 price drops to.
Title: Re: Project Fi Referral Thread
Post by: turketron on July 12, 2018, 08:17:35 AM
I had a 5x bootloop on me maybe six months ago, and sent it to LG to fix (I think they extended the warranty to 3 years or something as part of a class-action lawsuit). The minute I got it back from LG I traded it in to Fi for the moto x4. It's a mid-level phone but it feels like a pretty clear upgrade from the 5x, and was only like $150 after the trade-in. It's nothing fancy but it does what I need.

One of the benefits of the x4 is a slot for an SD card, which makes caching everything offline waaaaay easier so I can keep my data use really low. I threw in a 64gb sd card and now I have offline google maps for most of my state, a shitload of cached music, and all my podcasts sync and download when I'm on wifi.

I've had Project Fi over a year now and love it. I've used it in Croatia, Mexico, Canada, and Western Europe and it's been totally seamless. Having Google Maps for navigation in Croatia was especially useful and entertaining (lots of very long street names to pronounce). I have the Moto x4 and love it -- takes amazing pics and I have never had trouble getting reception.

Do you know if any other Fi-eligible phones have this feature available?

I know the Pixels don't, but I believe they have higher base-storage levels (up to 128gb I think) available. Looks like the new Moto and LG Fi-compatible phones that were released a couple months ago do have SD card capabilities.

I've been using it in California for about 8 months and I'm happy.  I had Verizon and there is one solid deadspot on my way home from work but its not emblazoned in my memory so I try not to be on the phone then.

https://g.co/fi/r/CA49WF

I've also used it internationally and LOVE the flexiblity.  I'll take one deadspot for $50/month less than Verizon.

Do Google Fi numbers work with picky two-factor authentication systems that refuse to accept a VoIP / Google Voice number?

I love Google Voice, but I need to provide my carrier's number for 2FA.
Title: Re: Project Fi Referral Thread
Post by: primozaj on August 26, 2018, 06:23:33 PM
Ditto... no problem with two factor, I use it for all of my email as well as other accounts.

I'll also add that the fact that phones (or at least the x4) are bringing back the SD is great.  Makes it much easier to port data from phone to phone.

I love Google Voice, but I need to provide my carrier's number for 2FA.

2FA will work via a text code or phone call on nearly any number. ANI validation as a second factor will fail for google FI. A few vendors are trying to solve this but it's not an easy problem by nature and likely won't be solved soon.

The new NYDFS regulations remove SMS, phone call, and ANI validation as acceptable factors to achieve 2FA. However, device printing remains acceptable(This is hit or miss with fi phones). I expect most financial companies will use voice biometrics as primary with KBA or primary key(Passcode) and the back-up factor in the near immediate future.

I moved from Republic wireless to FI a few months ago. Service is better where I currently live, but overall it's not a huge difference.

I haven't gotten a chance to test it overseas yet, which for me is perhaps one of the biggest reasons to have it.

I've been with Google Fi for almost 2 years and love it. Traveling overseas and not having to worry about buying a local sim card has been awesome. I’ve also been able to call my cousin and brother who both live abroad and it only costs $0.01/min. Definitely happy I switched from AT&T. My bill is about $30/m before the phone cost. I wasn't planning on upgrading my phone for another 6-12 months, but couldn't pass up on the incredible travel voucher promo they were running.

Google is currently running another promo where you can get up to $400 off depending on whether you bring your own device or buy one from them. Here are the details for that: https://fi.google.com/about/device-promo-terms (https://fi.google.com/about/device-promo-terms). For anyone interested in joining, here is my referral info:

Recently got a chance to test the service in Mexico, it works everywhere you'd expect a phone to work.

I used my phone a on cell towers handful of times and was billed $0.20 per minute for that. The 4 or 5 calls I made added an additional $2.40 to my bill. Calls back home over wifi were free. Texts are always free when overseas, which is awesome. Data is always $10 per GB in the hundreds of countries that Fi works in, which is an awesome deal.

With low data usage, my bill usually is somewhere between $24 to $30 per month, and averages $27. I usually keep data turned off, and only turn it on when I need it.

Compared to Republic wireless I'm paying slightly more (my bill used to be $24 for Republic with 1GB of data). So for $3 more per month I get to use data and make calls on cell towers when overseas. As someone who travels fairly frequently this is well worth the slight price increase for the convenience.

Finally, if anyone needs a referral code https://g.co/fi/r/YNRAFK

Hey Google Fi People -  I know this a referral thread, but you are also users, so jumping in with a question.

Does anyone have any success using IPhones with this service? I'm hesitant because the iphone is in beta and I'm planning on using Google fi internationally soon.

I might press the "sign me up" button anyway because I'm all about testing new things..but wanted to check first.

Thanks!

Following-Up!

I switched carriers about a week ago and so far, so good. Since we have iphones (that don't automatically connect to the three big networks), we are using the T-Mobile network and in our little corner of the world, the coverage isn't the best. :(

The cost was my main draw and talking on the phone isn't our first communication preference anyway. I get great service OUTSIDE of my home, so there is that.

I really like all the other parts of the service, especially seeing the real time data-usage on the app and the VM to text. NICE!

I'll take the good with the bad and have adjusted accordingly. LOL!

I got my first bill and it went (per month) from $173.00 to $26.00 (prorated). Just WOW!
