Job search, Portland ME area
« on: May 26, 2015, 02:26:58 PM »
Hello fellow Mustachians!

In an effort to both increase our 'stach, as well as move closer to family, my boyfriend and I are hoping to move down to the Portland, Maine area (currently residing in Québec City - I was born and raised in the states, am a US citizen, pay taxes in the US, and am therefore legally able to work).

If anyone has any leads on jobs either in the content editing/writing/communications field (approx. 5 years experience) or biotech/environmental engineering (approx. 5 years experience with a Master's) - please let me know!

Thank you very much!

If you are willing to look a little further south in the NH area there are several biotechs that are always hiring. Lonza and Millipore come to mind. North of Boston there are many as well, my go to resource for that type of search would be biospace.com.

My husband and I are both planning on moving to the southern ME area to be closer to family in the next five years when we start a family. The job market isn't particularly stellar up there for the field I am in (biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology) so we are planning on building our 'stache in our current jobs and then move when we are almost ready to FIRE. Our plan is to be able to support our new lives one day on much less so there isn't as much pressure to bring in income other than picking up a part time job (if necessary). Hubby and I are pretty busy people so I doubt we wouldn't be making money on the side with our other hobbies/interests.

Good Luck on your move, its always worth it to be closer to family.

You should definitely check out 2 Degrees Portland (http://www.liveworkportland.org/connect-visit/2-degrees-portland) to get started networking in the area.  It's a great way of meeting people - and you can specify what sorts of people you'd like to be connected with.  I'm new to the area, myself, and was excited to see something like this offered.  It's focused on the creative economy, but they define that very broadly.  And if you do wind up moving down here, maybe we could put together a mustachian meet-up.  I'm sure there are a few others.
