Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert
« on: August 05, 2016, 09:31:55 AM »
From the same author that brought you "Eat, Pray, Love" is this book about creativity.  She basically goes through all the possible excuses you might have for not being creative and kicks each one to the curb.

Favourite quote from the book:

"Human beings have been creative beings for a really long time - long enough and consistently enough that it appears to be a totally natural impulse.  To put the story in perspective, consider the fact: The earliest evidence of recognizable human art is forty thousand years old.  The earliest evidence of human agriculture is only ten thousand years old.  Which means that somewhere in our collective evolutionary story, we decided it was way more important to make attractive, superfluous items that it was to learn how to regularly feed ourselves."

Oh yeah I like those Julie!  There are so many gems in this book.

I like what she said about how everyone will try to pigeonhole creative people...

"People will stick you into all sorts of boxes.  They may say flattering things or they may say dismissive things about you.  It doesn't matter in the least.  Never delude yourself into believing that you require someone else's blessing (or even their comprehension) in order to make your own creative work.  And always remember that people's judgements about you are none of your business."

That last line is the best. SO hard to truly believe, but still true.

Couldn't put it down. Love Liz Gilbert! Also the author of Eat, Pray, Love.  As well as the less famous, but equally entertaining, The Last American Man.
