I second the person who mentioned Ken Follett's historical fiction books (most of his books are spy novels; I've never read them as I've never been interested in spy novels).  They're all long (900+ pages) but fast reads.  Pillars of the Earth was probably my favorite.  World Without End was its sequel, set 200 years later.  I've read the first two books in his Century Trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed them too.

In a similar vein is the book Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones.  It took about 100 pages to get really good but I think a lot of that had to do with the translation rather than the contents of the story.

I really liked Lonesome Dove too.  I'm not into Westerns but that one in particular is very good.  It's also long but very enjoyable.  I've read one of its sequels (well, I suppose it was a prequel) and liked it too, although not as much as the original.

I've read the first two books in Stephen King's Dark Tower series and really liked them too.

It's been awhile since I've read it, but I remember really liking Don Quixote.  I used to read a lot of fiction and did read a lot of shorter books, but for some reason I'm only remembering the long ones.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Sci-fi with lots of references to 80's pop culture. Couldn't put it down once I started, easily one of my new favorites.

Amazing book. I have recommended this to a few friends of mine that love their 80s references.

Mysteries or crime novels are usually pretty good for getting lost in without being challenging reading. I just read "The Lincoln Lawyer" by Michael Connolly. For mystery, anything by PD James is good.

Also spy novels---I enjoyed Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

For mysteries, I enjoy the J.D. Robb "In Death" series. (It's Nora Roberts, writing as JD Robb.) There's a ton of them and they are all easy, but engrossing. I blow through most of them in two days.

I have 2 sets of mindless novel series-

- Sookie Stackhouse series (probably not interesting for guys)
- Jack Reacher novels (they are published as standalones and totally out of order, so just pick up one you haven't read and you'll be fine)

I also enjoy Dresden Files but it's not as mindless to me as Stackhouse or Reacher.

I read Daniel Suarez' book about drones and it was awesome.  I think I found out about him from John Robb, but anyways, just finished Daemon.  It was awesome.  Reminded me of Fight Club, The Matrix, and The Davinci Code.
bump . Daemon and Freedom are awesome

They're so relevant too. I find myself talking about the concepts in both of them in real life.
