How to Retire Wild, Happy, and Free: Ernie Zelinski
« on: December 26, 2014, 02:28:00 PM »
I just picked up "How to Retire Wild, Happy and Free" by Ernie Zelinski as an audiobook from my public library.  It is not a "how-to" book on saving for retirement, but rather debunks the myths (also debunked here) that we all need a massive nest egg to retire on.  The focus of the book is on making the psychological adjustment to retirement -- dealing with the attendant lifestyle and identity changes that foster fear and keep many of us working too long.  It's full of lots of practical advice on how to structure your retirement to avoid boredom, explain "what do you do?" to people and how to stay active and healthy.

Highly, highly recommended!

I read it first about 5 years ago and recently reread as part of my psychological preparation for FIRE. Very worthwhile read for all MMMers.

Hey I have this book checked out from the library and I'm almost finished with it. I saw arebelspy recommended it once. It is very good and has given me more motivation to retire sooner rather than later.

Glad it helped!  :)

I'm particularly a fan of the "Get-a-Life Tree" activity in the book to help brainstorm ideas for what to do once you FIRE.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

Thanks for the recommendation.  I'm putting it on my list to read.

Just checked the library and there are 4 holds ahead of me so lots of interest in the book.    I'll have it soon enough.
