BOOK CLUB GAUNTLET!
« on: July 22, 2012, 01:58:51 PM »
Hi Folks,
I remember book clubs being mentioned around this forum in the past but don't believe there has been an official Book Club: Throw Down the Gauntlet Challenge (mod's feel free to move this if I am mistaken).  Some friends and I are in the early formulation of a book club and coupled with todays new MMM post about socialization it seems like it may be a fun gauntlet to throw down!  Who wants to start or join a book club?!

This could be arraigned in a number of ways: mustachians may want to meet with each other and read financial books, or this could be something outside of your MMM life with friends.  Either way, it is a fun and low cost social activity!

Instructions (obviously, modify to meet your needs):
-Pick and book and email out to a possible list of friends
-Rotate the location between the various book club members homes (or local park, whatev) *the host gets to pick the book!
-everyone brings a potluck snack or beverage to share
-have a great time
-the rotation can take place as often as wanted (once a month, once a season?)
-Books may be checked out from the library, shared between friends, purchased cheaply on an e-reader etc.

If anyone else is already involved in a book club and has more suggestions that would be great!  Please report back if anyone is accepting the challenge!

How about a virtual book club here on the forums where we discuss books?  You thread title made me think that's what this would be about, and I think that'd be cool!

+1 on this...I'd love to hear what the MMM hivemind has to say about ERE, Wealth of Nations, or whatever.

Anybody else?

I would be interested in participating in a virtual book club here on the forums.

Is everyone else here working their way through MMM's reading list?

I read A Random Walk Down Wall Street and Your Money or Your Life first, and now I'm on Economics Explained, with The Four Pillars of Investing and The Intelligent Asset Allocator up next for me. I'd love to read ERE, but I'm gonna wait until I've read more of the free books before I go buy one.

Maybe we could declare each month the month of a specific book and start a thread on that book where everyone could chime in. If we did a new thread every month, the old threads would stay specific to single books and be helpful for future users of the site. So August we'd start an ERE thread, and September we'd start a YMOYL thread, and so on...

I would be in for the virtual book club. I'm part of such a club on goodreads. Each month, we vote for the book we want to read. Perhaps someone could set up a monthly poll with book suggestions. We could set a deadline for voting (end of the month before), and the winner would be our book that month. Or [insert less convoluted idea here]

A poll would be a really good idea for that. Maybe I'll set one up.

I've also heard of book clubs for those with more to read than time where each memeber reads a book on the reading list and provides a "cliff's notes" version with most of the pertinent information.  Might be worth considering.

Anyone interested who doesn't have time for the book can still read the thread and ask questions and such.

I like the poll idea. I'll do it later today if grant hasn't done it first.
