We hope so too, we had our first at the Hospital and it went well.  This time my wife has decided for a home birth.  I am a little nervous about that but I felt it was her call.  I am a part of it but not to the degree that my wife is.  Hope yours goes well as well.

And to skunkfunk you do know it's your fault right.  LOL try to enjoy it.

I need cloth diapering advice! My wife and I both work, what do we do about nasty diarrhea and getting those diapers back home when family watch him???

And to skunkfunk you do know it's your fault right.

Actually, it is :(  She's had much back pain and cramps, hasn't done anything around the house all week. I tried to call her out on it - BAD IDEA

Such a newbie mistake.  So far I have been able to catch myself and NOT go there.  I even ran a cup of water up to her this morning before I left for work.  Giving her a back rub might get you out of the hot water at least for the time being.

We didn't go the cloth diaper's, we looked into it.  It just didn't seem to fit for us.  We both like the idea of it.  If we had a service in our area we would have went that route.  My wife is generally the cheapo in the pair and she ran the analysis on cloth versus throw away type, so I don't know the numbers.  I just know she didn't feel it was the best for us.

We have been collecting cloth diapers as they pop up on craigslist. We figured out we could cut $2k by using cloth, and if we have another they'll be essentially free, though I think she's decided pregnancy is ruining her life and will not be doing it again.

My wife felt the same way at points for our first child.  We are on number 2 and 2 may be the end who knows.  I would be ok with only 2.

Skunkfunk:

Family members can put wet or soiled cloth diapers into a special "wet bag" or an old bread bag or something. Warning: It will be unpleasant at the end of the day.

Personally, I break out the disposables when diarrhea hits. No need to be a martyr!

My biggest cloth diaper advice is diaper liners!  They hold the poop (i mean, mostly/sometimes) and you just throw that part away and deal with the diaper the same as a pee diaper (supposedly they're flushable, but not in our old house).  It's a slight ongoing cost, but a fairly small one, and totally worth it to me for making cloth diapering way less gross.

As for family, we figure that anyone taking care of our kids for us gets to make their own call on diapers, which in our case has meant all our babysitters use disposables.

Congratulations!  My wife is 5wks pregnant as well due May 6th with our third!  We traveled back to the east cost and told our family and found out my SIL is 12wks as well with her first.

We cloth diaper as well and use disposables when we travel.  We use disposables over night and when we used to go out during the day but got used to bringing a wet bag around with us.  Most of our cloth diapers and covers were hand me downs and with the third on the way we are getting a lot of use out of them.  I did the math and even with it being free it was marginally less expensive, we use coin operated washer and drying in our building.  It would definitely be cheaper is we owned our own washer and line dry.  For us we really like it because we don't produce a lot of waste and don't scramble to the store when we are down to our last disposable.

@lady - You just saved my life with your liner suggestion, thank you!!!  I've gotten used to the mess but it still the least pleasant part of cloth diapers.

I'm due April 1st. I've recently made the transition from vomiting a few times a day to vomiting every few days. Funny what a big difference having the words in a different order makes!

Since this seems to also be a cloth-diaper thread, we are planning to go old-school with flats and covers.

Congrats for all the new babies!

I'm almost 15 weeks expecting my first due early March. Now finally gaining some weight...

I'm also in for cloth diapers! But the models I found here all use a cloth liner inside so you can potentially reuse the diapers. People told me I can make do with 12 diapers and about 20 liners, even if I wash after every single use.

Congratulations, everyone! I'm 32 weeks along with my second child, due in early November.

Sorry to hear you're feeling ghastly, serpentstooth. I can commiserate as I felt unbelievably awful up to 16 weeks. It was like having a terrible hangover, motion sickness and norovirus all at the same time, 24 hours a day for 3 months. My first pregnancy was nothing like that so I had no idea it could be so bad.

Anyway, that's enough commiserating from me (sounding more like complaining now)... hope you feel much better soon. Look after yourself!

I'm 19 weeks pregnant with twins! Due Feb. 3. We miscarried with our first pregnancy in March of this year after a pretty miserable trimester of vomit and exhaustion! Once the vomiting started early on this time around, I decided I didn't need to be a martyr and started taking nausea meds pretty quickly. I was still sick and tired, but not nearly as bad as it would have been! Highly recommended.

I've been feeling much better the past few weeks. Still quite tired but I feel like I'm getting that bit of 2nd trimester energy back. Slowly putting on weight although I expected I would be much bigger by now!

Next week we find out the sexes!

Good luck to all of you in your pregnancies xo

We did a cloth diaper service, which was AMAZING. Yes, it was probably unmustachian, but I like to think that we made up for it by doing elimination communication and getting off the diaper train quickly. He was pretty much potty trained by 18 months, at which point we just switched to underpants during the day and disposables at night.

I never did a cost analysis, but I do wonder how the cost breakdowns would have worked for our particular situation.  Cloth diapers + self-washing vs cloth diaper service vs compostable inserts vs disposables.

We cloth diapered and rarely had diarrhea issues -- DS tended to go the opposite direction, i.e., poop infrequently.  No reason to anticipate problems, those that are going to arise will find their way to you with or without your help ;), meanwhile, if you have an interest in cloth diapering, get a half dozen or more so you can at least give them a try.

As for family, I'd talk to them about what works for them.  My mom also cloth diapered my son, and just kept her own set of cloth diapers at her house, and managed them entirely on her own -- no shlepping involved.  Yes, I do have a wonderful mother, but -- she's not the only one in the world.

I'm due in 3 weeks with our second.  There can be ups/downs to every stage of pregnancy (and every one is different!) but I was just telling my husband this morning that as many inconveniences and as uncomfortable as I am right now...  I still really like it.  Feeling the baby move is still totally amazing.

I aspired to cloth diaper the first time around, did tons of research and bought various types, new and used....  and then never did it.  I think I'm just lazy, although I have many friends who do it and swear it's not that hard!

My wife is a week past the arbitrary due date.  The accuracy is not that accurate IMHO.  All the same its hard to relax knowing at any minute we go into overdrive.  Having a home birth this go around adds a twist.

I'm not pregnant, but I was recently enough to completely commiserate. I am so sorry for everyone's nausea, fatigue, back pain, insomnia, and especially being overdue.

I have two in cloth diapers. I was skeptical at first, but my husband won out with tree hugger rationale. It's totally worth it and most people who have changed my kids agree that it's not a big deal. If you're worried about dealing with them when you're out and about, you can always just use cloth at home and disposables otherwise. (You'll most likely be spending more time at home than you do now anyway.) You'll still save money over all disposables, particularly since cloth diapers hold their value more than I would have expected.

Note to anyone who is early in their pregnancy: being overdue is horrible. For me, it was bad enough to have to be still dealing with third trimester pains, but the ”you haven't had that baby yet?!" over and over drove me crazy. So for the second one, I told all but 3 people that my due date was two weeks later than it actually was. Saved my sanity, highly recommended.

I'm almost 31 weeks, due November 18.  :)

We're definitely doing cloth diapers.  I have a pretty decent stash that I built up over the past couple of years (it took us a looong time to get pregnant).  Mostly prefolds + covers, some pockets.

Somewhat related:  I'm watching Breaking Bad on Netflix right now, and just saw the scene with Skylar's baby shower...and the gift of a tiny white gold tiara.  WTF.  If someone gave me something like that, I'd eBay it.  Maybe I'm a terrible person, idk.  Someone gave me one of those little "keepsake sets" with boxes for first teeth, lock of hair, etc., and it'll probably end up going to the consignment shop, because I'm not a sentimental person, and it just seems impractical and silly.  I'll never use it, so I'd rather get a couple of bucks for it and use the money for something I actually need.

We are also planning a home birth. Due date is October 1 good luck to you!

I spent 24 weeks of this pregnancy vomiting, looking forward to the end! We also use cloth diapers, a diaper sprayer was essential for us last time.

I'm 34 weeks along with #2 - due late October. We aspired to do cloth w/ #1 but ended up using all the cloth diapers as spit rags (they are awesome for that!). Doubt we'll make the leap this time, either. :-\

Hope those of you feeling crummy turn a corner soon. The fatigue of the 1st tri has come back for me and I'm having some back problems... frankly I can't wait for the little munchkin to arrive even though I know I should be savoring these last weeks of decent sleep...

Not pregnant now, but was recently.  My LO is six weeks old and is my third (last).
Just wanted to say congratulations to  everyone.
I went a week over due, and had a short and easy labor... maybe not related,  but I can't help but think that when she was ready,  she was REALLY ready.

I used cloth with my first, never pulled them out for the second, plan to try again,  seems a waste not to use them again.

Hope you all have good rest-of-your pregnancies and manageable births!

I'm almost 24 weeks pregnant-- due in January! This'll be our first, and we're planning a home birth and cloth diapers. I'm pretty entrenched in our local birth community, and have received a lot of cloth diapers from friends. Our investment in that realm has been minimal so far, and I'm looking forward to experimenting and figuring out what works for us. We have our own washer/dryer/drying rack, so that should help keep costs low.

I was pretty sick up til 16 weeks, too, and since then have been having migraines. Still, I'm totally stoked about being pregnant, and since I feel good on most days now, it makes it a lot easier to focus on the exciting stuff. I'm glad to connect with all of you! I hope the sickness eases off quickly!

I'm 13 weeks pregnant with our second, due in late March. This will probably be the last but who knows :)

No cloth diapers for us. I thought about it and ran a couple numbers but I was only half hearted about the whole endeavor and my husband was NOT on board, plus full time daycare and no family around. I decided to take up the breastfeeding torch instead (kiddo #1 is almost self-weaned at 23 months, mostly due to my being pregnant).

I want to talk to every parent I see buying brand name diapers at Target...use Amazon!!

Better still, buy the Target brand. Or the Walmart brand (Parents Choice) is even cheaper. They soak up plenty of pee, IME.

Dammit, you're all somehow making me miss being pregnant.  I hated it at the time--I got to sleep through the night about 9 nights the entire pregnancy, the rest of the time I needed to get up and pee at least once, and usually needed a mid-night snack.  My back ached horribly.  The nausea wasn't so bad for me (I only threw up twice) but I got horrible food aversions so my husband would prepare some of my favorite things and I'd get two bites before, "Nope!  Looks like I'm having another PB&J."  The exhaustion was awful in the beginning--it was almost too much to sit upright some days.  And the heartburn, oh the heartburn!  That didn't go away for the entire last half of my pregnancy.

But...now I'm kinda missing it.  Mine's 10 months old (!!) and we're not going to even talk about a second until she's 2, but at least now I know by the time it comes back around again I'll be excited once again.

For all of you ladies suffering through any or all of the symptoms I listed above, I salute you.  For the first-timers, it will totally be worth it.  :)  I hope everything goes smoothly for all of you!  And if you feel like it...pics when the babies show up so that we can coo over them?

I'm due with our first in late March. At this point, we are planning to do cloth diapers (probably not religiously...for longer trips to see family, the kid will almost definitely be in disposables), but a lot of it depends on whether or not I decide to go back to work or SAHM full-time.

Hi,
You may find this article interesting:
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/how-we-do-it/201312/keeping-expectant-mothers-guessing

The main message is:
Large-scale studies have consistently revealed enormous variability in pregnancy lengths calculated from LMP (Last Menstrual Period) . The average is indeed close to 40 weeks (280 days), but birth dates for normal pregnancies can be more than a month astray on either side.

When we had our first son I was introduced to the voodoo math which is your due date.  I have determined that due dates are very arbitrary and can be off up to 3 or so weeks in either direction.  It has never really concerned me that she is past the due date.  I always tell her millions of women have given birth in the past without having due dates.  Granted our success and health today is much better and we should monitor etc...  But keeping a healthy perspective of what the due date actually is.  IMHO an educated guess no more accurate then throwing a dart at a board with dates spread throughout.  Ok maybe a little more accurate then that.

Congrats on all the babies in the thread - Whooo!!! It's a good time to be alive and bring new lives into the world :)

We're expecting Kiddo #6, April 2015. Dear Wife is mostly over the initial nasty 1st trimester exhaustion/sickly phase. Back to riding her bike to the gym to teach Les Mills classes. I'm the mustachian, she's the real badass in the house ;)

Diapers: we stuck to disposable. The coast calc for cloth looks attractive at first... but when we added in the 1) utilities to clean them 2) dedicated storage 3) time to hassle; the disposables won out. No regrets.

Congrats USmarine75!

We are what you call "paper pregnant". Hoping to adopt a second child (girl) to be born in mid-December. We've been trying to adopt again since our first son turned 1 about a year ago. We've just been matched with this baby for a week, so lots of excitement and getting ready around here.

We are big fans of cloth diapering. Only rarely did I find the dirty diaper to be really disgusting to deal with. The way we approached it is not to stress about only using cloth. With our son, we used disposables in the first three weeks since was it was enough just to get used to having a baby around and we didn't want to deal with also learning how to cloth diaper. But it was really easy once we gave it a shot. Then we were using cloth at home, but used a disposable on outings, then eventually tried keeping him in cloth for an outing. We always had disposables around for babysitters or those days when we could tell he was having some "issues". Basically the approach was to use baby steps and stay in our comfort zone while testing out how to do cloth diapers even more in small increments. We even traveled with cloth diapers and would either keep things in a giant wet bag if it was a weekend trip or do laundry on the longer trips to my mom's house. I didn't find the liners to be all that helpful, but maybe we weren't using them right.

usmarine1975.... that must have been quite an experience! I hope you are all doing well.

Less than 4 weeks until my due date now. Exciting times! But hopefully not quite as exciting as yours...

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
