What kid gear to buy to prepare for the next six months or so
« on: September 14, 2016, 01:13:23 PM »
I'm going to a big twice-a-year consignment sale in my area of kid/baby stuff. I want to stock up on clothes and books for my fifteen month old but I was wondering if I should get some shoes as well? Is the only issue there making sure a get a big enough size? My kid is still working on crawling and pulling up to standing so we haven't worried about shoes at all yet so it's a completely unknown realm for me.

Also, is there anything else I'm not thinking of that I should get now? His sit-stand table that was given to us has been a HUGE hit and gets played with daily but I never would have thought to buy it. I'm trying to stock up for the next 6+ months (or basically till about age 2 if possible) to minimize the random weekend errands.

For shoes, I was told that the important thing to look for is flexible soles.

For clothes, will you need winter v coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants? Rain coat and boots. Dressy clothes v for holiday or pictures?

Basics:
Pants
Shirts
Socks, shoes
Light jacket or fleece or sweat shirt
Undies? Some kids potty train by age two. Potty chair or seat for the toilet.

Backpack. Sun hat. Swim suit.

I'm not sure what a sit stand table is, but how about gifts, for Christmas or birthday? Blocks, duplos, wooden trains, cars, balls are all favorites that age.

Things I'd look for, since this is a chance to get them cheap:

Robeez or other soft shoes

A wagon if you think you would use it to haul kid & cargo in
Bike trailer ditto
Walker wagon (is that the term?  I mean those low, flat wagons with a tall handle for the kid to push when learning to walk)
Push bike--your kid might not use it before age 2, but if there's one cheap I'd snap it up
Rocking horse if you have the space
Large outdoor toys (play house, picnic table, sandbox) ditto

Books

Oo, I never would have thought to look for a bike trailer but we did just (finally) acquire a second bike. I'd love to go biking as a family once the weather cools off. The walker wagon is a good idea too, I need to make sure it'll work on carpet.

We're just two months ahead of you age-wise. And I'm also getting ready for the consignment sale in our area :) We're already into shoes and I can tell you that I look for flexible sole ones and for Stride-rite, Pediped and See Kai Run brands in particular. I would buy a few different pairs in different sizes to grow into. We also keep a pair of Crocs or Native-like shoes (plastic all-in-ones) around for camping/summer play. As a sidenote, I've purchased all his shoes so far on ebay. Great deals on the good brands and most aren't very used, since they grow through them so quickly. It seems like there really is a quality difference with the good brands, but they're so expensive new. I can't pay more for a pair of baby shoes than I do for my own shoes!

At our sale, I'm going to be looking for some small play-gym equipment (slide, climber), any kind of bikes (trike, push bike), big blocks and Little People sets. Have fun!

My daughter started enjoying a tricycle around 18 months (we never had a push bike) and she loved a plastic art easel.  I set it up on the deck.  We'd paint outside and then hose down as needed.  It was so fun!  I also found great tonka toys at consignment sales.

You could probably buy a pair of runners in every size and count on using them all. I still do this and my oldest is just getting into adult sizes. Although, we have 2 girls, so if I overbuy for my oldest, my youngest will still use it. Season-specific items (sandals, winter boots) are more hit and miss because you don't use every size. Although we've used just about every size of winter coat, so that's another thing to look for.

Ditto the advice for large outdoor toys. Those are silly expensive new, but cheap used and they tend to hold up well.

The sale was today (well it goes through the weekend but I've gotten what I want) and it was great! I'll definitely plan better next time I go now that I have a better idea of what I'm looking for.

Highlights:
- Three pairs of shoes for $9! All have flexible soles.
- Books, books, books. I think the most expensive one was $2.50.
- There was a bike trailer but it had already sold. I circled it twice anyway like a vulture.
