Timeline for Insurance Changes?
« on: February 18, 2015, 07:22:46 AM »
My wife and I are due with our first in late May. I'm trying to get things in order from a planning perspective where work and insurance come into the picture. I'm changing our withholdings now, as it's easy to see that we'll have the deduction for the whole year, so that doesn't need to wait. But what about insurance?

Currently we're on an employee + spouse plan. Changing to employee + family will cost a bit more, and is contingent on a life event (which, of course, includes birth of a child). I assume that we can't make this change until after the child is actually born. But how quickly after the birth will this go into effect?

If there are issues with the birth for some reason which result in the child needing time in the hospital, does the insurance for the mother apply? Also, I'm under the impression that there are a fair number of early doctor's visits for infants. I assume that for these to be covered, your policy must already be changed. Is there typically enough time between birth and the first doctor's visit for a post-birth insurance change to have gone through prior to the first doctor's visit?

Congratulations to you and your wife!  We are also expecting in May with our third, so we've been around the block, twice!

Regarding the insurance, just give the hospital your insurance information and when you get back to work after your leave, i'm assuming your taking some time off right, you just inform HR about your new child.  The insurance will retroactively take into effect on the day your child was born.  Don't worry about the insurance changes, just give any providers your current insurance they know that it takes time to make the changes.  You won't see a bill for a few months anyway and if you do don't pay anything out-of-pocket until you confirm with you insurance that it is a valid bill.

If it makes you feel better have a quick chat with HR, they've gone through this a few time already.

Yes, just ask your HR department what the standard procedure is. Usually the baby is automatically included on the mother's insurance for a month (with the insurance company assuming you'll add him/her to your plan). Just make sure to make any changes within the window for life events. But really HR should have this down.
