She’s listening... full out not humble brag
« on: August 18, 2018, 04:42:02 PM »
I have to share I am so impressed by my 9 yr old.   Today, she went to a birthday party.   It was at a kids accessory store.  Each girls was given a budget of up to  $25to buy whatever they wanted.  The place was one of those that was all sparkly, colourful, like unicorns and rainbows had exploded.   I even liked the stuff, as it was so cute.

They had 2 hours to shop and when I went to pick up my daughter, her basket was empty.  She said she didn’t want to buy anything.   I ask her why, and she said the few things that she like she knew she could get elsewherefor a a lot less, and didn’t think it was right to buy useless things just because someone was paying.  She didn’t think the items were worth it.

So proud of her.  She evens said that other kids spent all of their budget and ask if they could have more.  I always worry that my kids would be spoiled as they do get a lot, but I think she going to be fine.

I just had to share.

That is a great sign that her frugal muscles are being flexed...I think I'm even more impressed though that she wasn't swept away in the crowd/peer pressure and capitulated "just because the other kids were doing it."

You should be very proud! I know I would be.  Any time a kid takes a contrarian stance to the group, they are clearly thinking for themselves.

Congrats to your DD. She seems to be very reasonable and not an easy victim of  peer pressure.

But what a strange way to celebrate a birthday party.

Good for her, and good for you!

I agree with chrisgermany, that is the strangest birthday party I ever heard of.

Yes it was a strange party.  I have never heard of such a thing.  The girls seemed to live it.  I just hate the whole idea of kids (or any one) spending for the sake of spending

My kidney is still young, let’s hope she is keeps that head on her shoulders even during the hormonal teens.   My oldest was like her when little, I have seen so,e of that common sense being knocked out.
